Mastered by Kevin Gray @ CoHearent Audio Los Angeles

Similar to his first Shelter outing (Getting Ready), but with more of a rock feel.
- Richie Unterberger/AMG (3/5 Stars)

Released in 1972 as the second of Freddie King's three releases for Shelter Records, Leon Russell's Tulsa-based label. In fact, when Russell first formed Shelter, he reportedly did so partly to play out his vision of recording one of his favorites, Freddie King.

King's output on Texas Cannonball includes brilliant covers of songs by Howlin' Wolf, Lowell Fulson, Leon Russell, Bill Withers and Elmore James.

Backing artists include many musicians who played with Eric Clapton in the 1970s. Clapton has stated many times over that Freddie King was among his chief influences. Supporting musicians include Leon Russell on piano, Carl Radle and Donald "Duck" Dunn on bass, Jim Gordon, Chuck Blackwell and Al Jackson on drums, Don Preston on guitar and John Gallie on organ.

Recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis in February 1972.

Texas Cannonball is among the first titles to be pressed at Acoustic Sounds' Quality Record Pressings.

Ripping Note

The notes are short on this one. Perfect pressing; centered, flat & extremly quite. Highly enjoyable right out of the sleeve.
Well done, Quality Records!!!!

Thanks aksman! I didn't have this one from Shelter yet.
I am still going to compare the Getting Ready... from Analogue with the first press Shelter release that I ripped and uploaded to Demonoid a few weeks back. My expectations are high on these re-issues!

So how is this QRP pressing? My QRP Tillerman was very nice.

I quickly compared Getting Ready... with my first press. The guitar is a little more upfront on the first press
and sounds a little fatter. The vocals sound a little less polished, but that can also be caused by the age of
the record. I think Steve Hoffman did a good job.
I cannot compare this re-issue with an original Shelter pressing, but I guess my findings for Getting Ready...
will be similar for this mastering.
So I would probably say that the first press will sound a little better, but it's good to have a high-res rip
of this great album that is dead silent and that will probably be almost as good as the original release.
Aksman, thanks again!

PS was this one mastered by Kevin Gray and Getting Ready... by Steve Hoffman?
Posted By: aksman Date: 08 Sep 2011 12:45:10
@ pymander

Yes, this one is mastered by Kevin Gray alone, "Getting Ready" by Steve Hoffman & Kevin Gray....

Hi aksman, will you post Getting Ready too? Thanks.
Posted By: aksman Date: 08 Sep 2011 18:28:05
@ Narayan23

Getting Ready was posted by garybx yesterday.... I'm not a fan of posting similar records at the same time. Please take his rip, it sounds pretty nice.

Thanks aksman. I am really loving hearing all the old Freddie King vinyl. The man was the true king (no pun) of the classic Texas Blues guitar sound. I was just playing a YT clip of his "Ain't No Sunshine" for some folks the other night and they were amazed they had never heard of this guy.

Also love that this, like Getting Ready, was recorded at Ardent in Memphis with John Fry. Has a little of the same magic as the awesome-sounding Big Star records.

Thanks again!
