| “ | The story of Back to Black is one in which celebrity and the potential of commercial success threaten to ruin Amy Winehouse, since the same insouciance and playfulness that made her sound so special when she debuted could easily have been whitewashed right out of existence for this breakout record. (That fact may help to explain why fans were so scared by press allegations that Winehouse had deliberately lost weight in order to present a slimmer appearance.) Although Back to Black does see her deserting jazz and wholly embracing contemporary R&B, all the best parts of her musical character emerge intact, and actually, are all the better for the transformation from jazz vocalist to soul siren. With producer Salaam Remi returning from Frank, plus the welcome addition of Mark Ronson (fresh off successes producing for Christina Aguilera and Robbie Williams), Back to Black has a similar sound to Frank but much more flair and spark to it. Winehouse was inspired by girl group soul of the '60s, and fortunately Ronson and Remi are two of the most facile and organic R&B producers active. (They certainly know how to evoke the era too; Remi's "Tears Dry on Their Own" is a sparkling homage to the Motown chestnut "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," and Ronson summons a host of Brill Building touchstones on his tracks.) As before, Winehouse writes all of the songs from her experiences, most of which involve the occasionally riotous and often bittersweet vagaries of love. Also in similar fashion to Frank, her eye for details and her way of relating them are delightful. She states her case against "Rehab" on the knockout first single with some great lines: "They tried to make me go to rehab I won't go go go, I'd rather be at home with Ray" (Charles, that is). As often as not, though, the songs on Back to Black are universal, songs that anyone, even Joss Stone, could take to the top of the charts, such as "Love Is a Losing Game" or the title song ("We only said good bye with words, I died a hundred times/You go back to her, and I go back to black"). --Allmusic | ” |

I always loved your songs since the first time I heard them.
This is a big loss for all!
RIP
RIP Lady Amy.
I like her style of singing. Like Billie Holiday, just a tiny bit behind the rhythm, and next back in pace with it again. A rhythm all her own, her voice coming and going, playing a light-hearted hide-and-seek with the instrumental accompaniment. Wondrously musical, this girl.
This chick is/was white?
Where did she come from and how could nobody keep her alive?
First time hearing this. Holy shit I am sad now.

Thanks for the links.
Sad but her death was predictable though. No surprises.

"I just reripped this"
I have yours dated July, 16th 2010. Let's hear the difference.
German newspaper "Frankfurter Rundschau" rightly writes:
(cit) We are far from marking this idiotic, deeply sad death simply as self-inflicted. But it is not surprising, nor aural, - it's only miserable.
One finds no fateful concatenation of circumstances, nor can any subcultural scene's bustle be blamed.
The tragedy can quite be found in the all-round helplessness [!!]. Amy Winehouse's death in his stupid expectable sible is simply a nuisance.
Nick Kent wrote in 2008 in the London Sunday Times about the "collapse Winehouse industry" and said: "If she gathers in the coming months the presence of mind,
to fight her condition, she can pick up her career and build on it. If not, she condamns herself to becoming a joke and a freak magnet,
the skinny rehab-girl, saying "Nonono" to the withdrawal until she has poisoned herself to the grave".
Amy Winehouse has chosen the second option. (cit)
How very true! A reminder for the living (and for life in general).
I lost two close friends in the last 3 years, who had chosen the very same way. You just could not reach or even help them.
Like Amy, I still remember them more as children, than as grown-ups.
Goodbye Amy, see you in another life...
You wrote : "as most of us who are longtime fans don't have access to PB's "new offerings"..... "
Well, are there any secrets there regarding PB's "new offerings" ?
No ! All is legal, official & accessible, afaik.
Strictly speaking, this is not true; but for an addict it feels that way. That one step – to just kick the habit, preferably with professional help - seems a sheer impossibility.
For Winehouse: being in the spotlights so much, finding sites on the internet where people could place bets as to how soon she would die cannot have made it any easier for her to take a step for the better.
So many hits to be found on the net where people openly speak of “that trainwreck of a human”. Her ugliness. Her ruined career. The bastardly, almost gleeful, stereotypical hatred...people are mean.
The girl must have felt as if the whole world was against her. Kick the habit, yes; but having to fight the multitudes trying to prove she did indeed kick it...well, I’ll give you that battle. Try to win it.
As write on the post this is pbthal's rip, not mine, so I don't have the original in 24 !!!
PBthal's rips dithered to 16/44 are infinitely better than 99.7% of so-called 24/96 "hi-rez" rip offerings here.
What a stupid but talented looser.
CD link is for the LP rip.
