Great sax blowing from John Klemmer – clear, clean, and extremely well-focused – with nary a dull moment throughout! The album's a mostly acoustic one – save for some keyboards from Milcho Leviev – and the sound is tremendous, very much in keeping with the farther-reaching modes that Klemmer was exploring at the start of the 70s – imaginative, always-creative solos that really take off in the freedoms of the post-Coltrane years, yet which always stay focused and soulful throughout.
Other players include Oscar Castro Neves on guitar, Ray Armando on percussion, and Roy McCurdy on drums – and tracks include "Tropical Snowflakes", "Love Affair", "Paradise", "Arabesque", "Touch", and "Summertime"
"On John Klemmer’s "Straight From The Heart" (Nautilus NR4) I could not imagine a more realistic reproduction of a saxophone. On "Arabesque", I could hear right into the instrument. Dynamic pulses and little resonances inside the instrument were clear, open, solidly imaged and with a fullness of resonance that went right to the heart. I am a fanatic for first row seats at live events with natural instruments, and it had all of the feeling and presence of the live performance close up." By Michael Levy Audiophilia

JOHN KLEMMER-STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART-NAUTILUS NR-4

Around 20 years ago, Nautilus was a combination of Mobile Fidelity and Sheffield Labs. Nautilus produced both excellent reissues and a few of their own Direct-to-Disc recordings. This may have been their most successful effort.
The sound is exactly what you look for (but don't always get) in a direct to disc: very immediate, clean and dynamic. It is up there with the others of this type I've already put on the list. Klemmer's sax solo at the very beginning of Side One (Arabesque) is absolutely stunning. The music is light, but you shouldn't expect that much from a dedicated audiophile recording.
Thanks so very much.
