MFSL 1-006 (1978) ~ JVC Japan "SuperVinyl" ~ Half-Speed Mastered by Stan Ricker

John Klemmer came onto the contemporary jazz scene in 1975 with his debut Touch, an album that spoke directly to smooth jazzbos of this era with a lilting sax line and various instrumental interpretations, lending it a distinctly mid -70's sound. However, do not be dissuaded by the stamp of 1970's jazz trends; this is a worthy effort for any jazz fan to include in his/her collection, simply because it is beautiful music.

The overall impression left by Touch is one of relaxation. The opening track, "Touch", implores the listener to slink away to the land of guilty pleasures..... while delivering in a pristine manner. "Waterwheels" sounds as though it might have been a nice lullaby for the tots of this era, including myself, born the summer of this album's release. All of the songs have a stand-out quality, products of a real musician with a hypnotic power. Feel free to stop the album after track seven; " Walk With Me My Love and Dream" is cheesy, at best, odd at worst. Clever, I suppose, if one takes this as a concept album of romance, relaxation and wonder, but it comes off as a very bad Barry White rip-off set to cloying music. It ruined my overall take-away the first time around, but in context, one stumble amid greatness is forgivable.

Prepare for a major dose of 70's flavor, but definitely make "Touch" a part of your musical library if you enjoy smooth jazz.

AllMusic 4/5 Stars
