Seven days to the 21st century: the rain will not let up in Taiwan, and a strange disease reaches epic proportions.Despite evacuation warnings, the tenants of a run-down public housing building stay put. A plumber has been sent to Hsiao-Kang's apartment, but instead of fixing the leak, he leaves a gaping hole in the middle of the living room. Through the hole, Kang spies on his downstairs neighbor, a woman who stockpiles toilet paper and dreams about singing and dancing in Kang's arms. (-DVD cover)



In the final days of the year 1999, most everyone in Taiwan has died. A strange plague has ravished the island. Supposedly spread by cockroaches, the disease sends its victims into a psychosis where they act like the insects. Eventually, they die. The Hole takes place in a crumbling apartment building (which is especially well created; kudos to the set designer!). Its two protagonists live right above and below each other. The woman is on the lower floor, and the pipes above her apartment are leaking fiercely, threatening to destroy her food supply, not to mention her sanity. She calls a plumber to go check it out, and he accidentally pokes a hole through the floor of the man's apartment. The two have never met before, and they come into contact through the hole. The script is quite brilliant. Few films are simultaneously this funny while remaining completely human, deeply exploring the human condition, especially feelings of loneliness and despair. something one doesn't expect from such slow-moving (think Tarkovsky or Antonioni) cinema. This utter, absolute demystification of everything about his characters, the lack of backstory or most cultural signifiers (amplifying the alienation of the characters) makes 'The Hole' - and his other films - rather disorienting and emotionally draining. Which doesn't sound like a recommendation, but I think there is a great style and a unique energy emerging in his work, making for compelling viewing - one of the most fascinating filmmakers working today. It must be stated that this is not a film for everbody. However, if your taste is for art house productions with a twist, then definitely this is one to see.
