Luc et Jean-Pierre Dardenne-Rosetta (1999)

Winner of the 1999 Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and widely hailed as a masterpiece , 'Rosetta' is an extraordinary portrait of a resourceful teenage girl struggling to find her way in a tough world. Written and directed with great skill and energy by writer/director brothers Luc & Jean-Pierre Dardenne, the film stars newcomer Emilie Dequenne, who won the Cannes Best Actress award for her outstanding realisation of the title role.




The first scene, like almost all others, is a fighting scene. A girl, about 18, is sacked from her factory work because her trial period is over. The girl, Rosetta, is quite upset and the cops will have to arrive to get her out. She has her reasons: she lives in a caravan, with her alcoholic mother. Rosetta lives with her alcoholic prostitute mother in a camping trailer at a run down campground called The Grand Canyon. She is in her late teens, doesn't have any friends (except one she meets during the course of the story) or even communicates much with other people, and is only interested in getting a regular job and living a normal life. Rosetta has clad herself in mental and emotional armor. No one in her life sees her as a person in her own right. She is relevant to them only as she applies to their lives and interests in the short-term--Rosetta the Employee, Rosetta the Tenant, Rosetta the Hoodlum, Rosetta the Lay, Rosetta the Obstacle...bits-and-pieces of a person. Rosetta breaks all of the rules of film making and comes up with an amazing drama of almost epic proportions. This is a heartbreaking film, in line with the Dogme 95 manifesto. No artificial lights, no music, shot on location, and with non professional actors. The best of these is inevitable- Rosetta herself, played by Emile Dequenne. the story of Rosetta, the young girl that desperately looks for work, gets bigger and will never get down again. It's a treason that starts the dramatical side of the story, and from then on, the cinema of the Dardenne can handle perfectly the multiples scenes of moral tension, until the unforgettable, moving last sequence.
