A film poem inspired by the poet Caesar Vallejo. A story about our need for love, our confusion, greatness and smallness and, most of all, our vulnerability. César Abraham Vallejo Mendoza (March 16, 1892 – April 15, 1938) was a Peruvian poet whose passionate political beliefs and opposition to Peru’s dictatorial rule led to his lifelong exile... Although during his lifetime he published only three books of poetry, he is nonetheless considered one of the great poetic innovators of the 20th century. Dark, surreal, depressing, bleak and based on a poem by Peruvian Communist Caesar Vallejo, "Songs from the 2nd Floor" is comprised of 45 vignettes, some steeped in Swedish folklore, others in religion, and most damning the current state of our post-modern capitalist society.


One evening somewhere in our hemisphere, a strange series of illogical events take place: a clerk is made redundant in a degrading manner; a lost immigrant is violently attacked in a busy street; a magician makes a terrible error in his act... sleep on this night does not come easily to the citizens of this town. The following day,the signs of chaos are taking hold as the madness grips a board of directors and the city itself is strangled by a horrendous traffic jam. In the midst of this mayhem, one person stands out: Karl - covered in soot from the fire he had set to burn down his furniture store in order to get the insurance money. While the new millennium is casting its web and creating a vast mental breakdown, Karl gradually becomes conscious of the absurdity of the world and realizes just how difficult it is to be human.

In a series of loosely connected, beautifully shot, meticulously framed and brilliantly designed tableaux vivants, director Roy Anderson gives his unique vision on Western civilization, a vision that is often angry, absurd, dark, surreal and hilariously funny. It is set in a gray, sombre, anonymous city filled with grey sombre anonymous people who are all lonely, frustrated and searching in vain for salvation in a cold and uncaring universe. If there is a better metaphor for Mankind at the end of the twentieth century - or the beginning of the twenty-first - than this movie's final image I have not seen it. Winner of the 2000 Cannes Film Festival "Songs from the second floor" depicts a world poised on the brink of catastrophe: cars grid-locked for miles; workers humiliated and cast out; etc. yet amid the chaos moments of dark comedy abound and it proves that Roy Andersson is true to himself.


Roy Andersson born on 1943 in Sweden. He studied literature and then film,graduating from the Swedish Film Institute. While his first feature, "A Swedish Love Story" (1970) was hailed as a masterpiece (winner of Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival), his second film, "Giliap" (1975) flopped. In the late 80's he returned to the big screen through the short-film back door. His real comeback was his 3rd feature "Songs from the second floor".
