Then 24 years old Andrei Tarkovsky playing a role in his first film 'The Killers'.

'The Killers' was based on a Hemingway story. It was Andrei Tarkovsky's first film, co-directed by
classmates Alexander Gordon and Marika Beiku in the autumn of 1956 while attending grade three of the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK).

'The Killers' was Andrei Tarkovsky's first film, co-directed by classmates Alexander Gordon and Marika Beiku in the autumn of 1956 while attending grade three of the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK). E. Hemingway's collected works had just been published for the first time in the Soviet Union and Tarkovsky suggested that they base their film school short on 'The Killers' 'a very tragic story, filled with deeper truth.' VGIK formally approved the project, thus for the first time allowing students to make a film based on a foreign work. This nineteen minute film is divided into three scenes. The first and the last scenes at the cafe were directed by Tarkovsky; the middle, in Andresen's room, was directed by Gordon. All parts were played by fellow students. Gordon played the shopkeeper, and Tarkovsky played the customer whistling 'Lullaby of Birdland', a tune they were acquinted with through listening to 'Voice of America' broadcasts. This 1950's tune was widely regarded as a symbol of freedom and its inclusion in the film adaptationof a 1920's Hemingway story was Tarkovsky's idea. The film was highly praised by class instructor Mikhail Romm.

wow, thanks FNB47. I never really liked Tarkovsky, or just didn't understand him. Always had great difficulty with his poetics, which seemed very rhetorical to me (like the infamous empty swimming pool scene in Nostalghia). But I never explored these early films, lame duck that I am. And now, thanks to people like you FNB, I've seen this one, and The Steamroller and The Violin, and Ivan's Childhood (what have I been doing all these years? what a masterpiece!), and I think it's great, terrific, beautiful. And through these films I now get a beter feel, or understanding, or what's the name, for Tarkovsky's style. So I'll be revisiting some of those less narrative-driven works by the master, and I humbly thank you (and all the other great people with great film taste like you) for pointing out the way...

For the second set of links (Rapidshare.com (7 * 100 MB + 92.0 MB) ), I've got a message
"Due to a violation of our terms of use, the file has been removed from the server."
Probably because of the name of the files "The Killers" it seemed like violence promoting content?!
Can somebody help please by uploading it again?
