Lend yourself to others and give yourself to yourself. -Montaigne.

After leaving her husband, Nana (A. Karina) is slowly driven towords a life working the streets. Pimp Raoul teaches her the tricks of the trade, but when Nana falls in love and tries to escape the streets, Raoul's not ready to let his latest commodity slip out of his hands so easily. (-DVD cover)

Director Jean-Luc Godard places his feisty heroine in a georgeous looking 60s Paris where coffee bars are populated by philosophers and the streets are awash with machine gun-toting gangsters. Testing the limits of film language, Godard sets up each scene with a flourish, using zooms, pans and close-ups in such unusual and unexpected ways that he challenges all our preconceptions of what cinema is, what it does, and what it can be. (-DVD cover)

This is Godard at his most playful, and 'Vivre sa vie' is by turns low-brow, high-brow, action-packed and dialogue driven. It is a masterpiece of inventiveness that's as radically mind-blowing today as it was four decades ago. (-DVD cover)

Nana is seen as a human being, a young woman who is confused about life and what her place may be and the way that becoming a prostitute seems an obvious choice for her. Of course, she is also romantic and somewhat naive, and, in the end, Nana is unable to handle everything that is handed to her in her new life (http://imdb.com/title/tt0056663/usercomments)

It is a film that is made up of disparate strands - poetic, documentary, melodramatic. It both creates Nana as star of the piece, with her sweet smile, beautiful coats, and cropped hair, and even, at one point, identification with Joan of Arc, yet undermines this to underline how ordinary, how vulnerable, even how banal she is. If you're new to Godard, start with this. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0056663/usercomments)

I love this kind of cinema (vivre sa vie), because it tells you the raw reality without masks, and doesn't lie you with the same old shit that rots cinema, with scriptbuilders that think little the stories and let producers change their plans, so there are millions and millions of dollars inverted in visual effects that don't tell anything, characters completely senseless, and definitely a script with thousands of holes. Vivre Sa Vie, doesn't lie you, tells you that you are watching a movie, and that the person who is filming is a person like you. Tells you the filmmaking is something universal, and that with only a few money and much of imagination you can reach very far. Sorry for the sermon. But that's the cruel trueth (http://imdb.com/title/tt0056663/usercomments)
