| “ | If you were around in the late 70's and were within earshot of rock and pop radio, you heard the Eagles' 'Hotel California' and if you've listened to classic rock radio since then and till today, you are familiar with this album many times over, possibly even sick of it (as you might be with Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours', Pink Floyd's 'The Dark Side of the Moon' and most of Led Zeppelin), as you might be sick of Eagles music in general. However, just this Christmas day, I was with family, and the household happened to have a superb DVD/Dolby surround setup and the man of the house received the DVD-A of 'Hotel California' as a gift. He put it on, and I was there to experience this already time- honored album in glorious multi-channel surround sound. If you thought you've heard enough of the Eagles' best album, you ought to give this a chance -- the classic title track alone makes it worth the purchase. You will hear cymbal swells, guitar parts separated and panned, vocals and all that is the musical brilliance of this album as you never have before. "Wasted Time" sounds so good it will make you weep (this was always one of my favorite Eagles album tracks, as is "The Last Resort", also benefitting from the DVD-A treatment) ... highly recommended for Eagles, classic rock, and music fans in general needing to hear how good either the DVD-A or SACD format can be. 5. Wasted Time (Reprise)
6. Victim Of Love
7. Pretty Maids All In A Row
8. Try And Love Again
9. The Last Resort
Original recording: 1976
DVD-Audio DTS 5.1 release: 2002 (out of print)
IMPORTANT INFORMATION...PLEASE READ!
This is a fresh re-rip of the original DVD-Audio to 24/96 SIX-CHANNEL wave files, compressed with FLAC. It replaces my previous DVD-Audio post that was erroneously ripped at 24/96 4-channels surround. While it sounded excellent, it was missing the center and rear channels. My apologies for any inconvenience.
Burn to DVD disc using your favorite DVD-A authoring software (I use discWelder CHROME).
The new rip has been burned and successfully tested on three of my DVD players (Panasonic, Marantz and Oppo), but due to inherent watermarking of original DVD-A discs, the burn may not play with a few DVD models.
So that you may test the process without downloading the entire 2.4GB rip, I've uploaded a single 24/96 6-channel test file of Track #5 to Rapidshare -- http://rapidshare.com/files/250069679/TEST_TRACK-6CH.rar -- that can be burned to DVD using a DVD Audio authoring program. If it plays on your DVD player without stopping after 15 or 20 seconds, the entire DVD-Audio will play without a hitch and you can download all the files in the main link below with confidence and enjoy the outstanding sound provided by DVD-Audio.

One slight problem.. When I listen to this using Winamp + headphones, "background" details sound very smoothed (like with a reverb) and stereo image is strange. I suspect that the problem is with Winamp mixing 4 channels into stereo... Is is tru and what music player can handle this correctly?
@stfine: It's your (and most) sound card that only plays back a stereo mix (probably the front 2 channels) of multi-channel; you have to listen to it on a DVD player w/surround sound amp/receiver & system after burning to DVD-A to hear the real thing.
@amitnewyork - probably the original multichannel version was made for the QUADRAPHONIC that was in style in the 80s and this is just a strait copy to dvda by the record company
If this was taken from same release, then something is wrong. The Elektra release contained a 6 ch 96kHz/24bit MLP surround track.
Please state the source of this 4 ch rip? I have never heard of an official quad mix of "Hotel California".
BTW:
6 ch (5.1) surround audio on a DVD-audio is mostly 96kHz/24bit, MLP encoded, which is a lossless encoder.
@amitnewyork & "gfv0" I downloaded the files, burned them to DVD with DVD Flick, a great Linux proggie, and got full multitrack 5:1 surround sound on my home theater system. My receiver indicated the input was 5:1, so my theory is that all the channels are contained in the wavs. But it sounds like you're trolling more than critiquing anything.
@vanpelten this is one helluva post and want to thank you for it. Despite having several copies of Hotel California, including aksman's fab vinyl rip, this is definitely the king, I've listened to it 4 times already:)
I think that CD is watermarket! My Denon DVD 3930 stopped after 15-20sec.
I have byrned as DVD-Audio with Discwelder Chrome2!
I just uploaded the shortest track (#5, title smacks of irony) to RS so you might test it by burning to disc with your favorite DVD audio authoring program. Try it on your DVD player to see if you encounter any problems. I tested the compiled burn on three players, Panasonic SD-97, Marantz BD8002 & Oppo DV-983H, and it played flawlessly in all of them, as it appears to have on several other units that were mentioned in the thread. But I can't vouch for every player out there and how they'll react to DVD-Audio compilations via watermarking...I don't want anyone wasting unnecessary bandwidth. The link:
http://rapidshare.com/files/249999596/DVDATEST_TRACK.rar (about 70mb)
PS: Thus far, there have been 240+ downloads/each of this post and only one reported problem relating to a Denon unit that I've heard about. However, if anyone else encounters an issue, please post it here along with your player, model number and DVD audio authoring program you used.
Foobar 2000 + Channel Mixer component (http://pelit.koillismaa.fi/plugins/show.php?id=109), Output Channels in component config set to 2.
))))))) Marvelous!!!
The quality is quite good, except that for my taste missing strength in the sound, so it takes well to turn the sound button. :)
Excellent upload though. I really commend your effort.
edit: I did download your testfile. It is 93.4MB as a WAV. My rip is 140.1MB and includes 6 channels.
edit2: I checked in Audacity as well on your and my WAV of Wasted Time (reprise), and you seem to miss LFE and Center channel.
Here's Track 5 (appropriately named, after all) correctly ripped (in Level 8 FLAC) with all 6 channels: http://rapidshare.com/files/250069679/TEST_TRACK-6CH.rar
As penance, I'm going to rerip the rest and up them to rapidshare with a new link. In the meantime, please accept my sincerest regret for the oversight; thanks to johhenrik for the candid feedback. I plan to post a few more DVD-A rips, assumimg I have any credibility left after this blooper :-0
error (http://rapidshare.com/files/250059977/TEST_TRACK-6CH.rar)
The uploader has removed this file from the server.
Few things
1) LINKS ARE DEAD, can someone please reupload it?
2)How do I convert it to a stereo? I want 24/96 stereo, is it possible? and how can I do it please ?
@JustPlay: 0 Flac makes for less compression, larger files to download...especially with a post this large. The working link for my 6-channel test track is: http://rapidshare.com/files/250069679/TEST_TRACK-6CH.rar. I inadvertently removed it when deleting the original files.
The difference is perhaps only 200-300 mb, if it is a price for higher quality sound, it's not so high..
That seems to me more acceptable than vice versa.

As for the original test file, dump it; I put the new 6-channel Track #5 up for test and approbation here in case you missed it (just noticed it's been dl'd 9 times already and no bitching...yet:
http://rapidshare.com/files/250069679/TEST_TRACK-6CH.rar
@JustPlay: With the new 6-channel rip, we're looking at maybe another 500mb or more larger if I use FLAC's 0 mode...I'll stick with 8, the best compression...especially for those good souls who might be re-downloading it again. I don't know why the playback on your pc & sound card should suffer...they'll still be lossless files.
It's mean, I have no particular reason to re download.
Thank you
BTW, why not use FLAC command line or a FLAC GUI frontend to decompress the files? Other than dbPoweramp, that's my main FLAC decompressing app. Lastly, you're absolutely correct, unlike lossy codecs such as MP3, Ogg, etc. there's no difference in sound quality due to compression ratios with FLAC or APE...lossless in, lossless out. Oh, I also discovered that APE (best stereo compression IMHO) won't do multichannel...FLAC is the only one.
@JustPlay: I'm not being "mean" believe me; just trying to do right by the people who expect the best, most efficient downloads on Avax. My original post was also FLAC level 8. I know how good the files you downloaded sound, so if you're listening with your current PC/sound card configuration and are happy with them, why bother with another (and even larger) download?
Best,
VP
It is simply not possible to hear a difference between FLAC 0 and FLAC 8 because there is none audible difference. The only differnce can be found in the file size... The author integrate that feature into FLAC only for faster encoding/decoding on slower computers. There is even no change in the bitrate. You can compare it with the different options of WinRAR for example... Slow, Fast, Fastest. Her is alsio the only difference in packaging/unpackaging speed, after decoding you have the original files again.
(Foobar ships with a 5.1 to stereo converter component, but the result seems too loud comparing to Channel Mixer plugin. Gonna compare them when have the real thing - the first track :)

@Guthead: Hey, it's just a matter of luck, I didn't have a clue prior to your situation that some machines still have watermark issues. I've never ever had a problem with my Oppo and any DVD or even rot-gut media; would trade the Marantz and/or Panny to keep my Oppo...if pressed...in a heartbeat! Just upping the 13-files of the new 6-ch. rip as I write this. Burned a DVD-A with them and it tested flawlessly in all three players. If I get positive feedback on it, I'll post a rip of Queen's "Night At The Opera" DVD-A. I'm sure there's a workaround for you...will research and PM you when I find something.
I use Foobar not to rip but to play. Stereo acoustic and good headphones are all I have at the moment.
Thank you for being so up-front with everything and for the excellent work you do, Vanpelten, it is very appreciated!
As for posting ISO, why not the 24/96 vinly rips that need to be reauthored to DVD? How come it just occured to you to make the suggestion? T-h-i-n-k-i-n-g and r-e-a-d-i-n-g are fundamental. Say g'night, gracie! LOL!
quality of hi-res music. I think DVD-audio & SACD failed because people were not exposed to it.
@VanPelten: Thanks for the effort, especialy fixing it. About your credibility, I think it is even higher now. Admitting a
mistake and fixing it so soon, means a lot more. Any chance that you can send me a list of DVD-audio titles you have. I was
lucky to get some of these discs myself. I am always hoping to find people to share with. Do you perhaps have "Fleetwood Mac -
Rumours"?
@amitnewyork: This DVD-audio only have a 6 ch hi-res part, no hi-res stereo tracks. What happens mostly on discs like this,
is that the producer includes downmix coefficients onto the disc, which a proper DVD-audio player uses to play a stereo downmix.
My NAD T535 displays "NO DOWNMIX" when coefficients are not present and plays front L & R channels only on the stereo output.
"Emerson, Lake And Palmer: Brain Salad Surgery". It is available at Mojave Productions.
@amitnewyork - Would love to sample your Depeche Mode DVD-As, when you have the time. I'll dig around for something good & rare and upload it. Thanks to my crappy internet provider's stingy 5GB upload cap, I'll have to forgo torrents for the month in order to do so.
Thanks once again to VanPelten for bringing us an audio gem and for galvanizing this interesting discussion.
But before authoring your DVD audio with DW, you must convert the flac files to waves...dbPoweramp is the only one I can recommend that will do so while keeping the hi-rez multichannel files "as source" -- which is the option you want to select for the conversion. Once you've done that, discWelder will recognize the wave files after you select the directory/folder in the left window. Refer to the the jpeg screen capture I included in the Scans folder that shows discWelder interface with the file directory on the left and the "Hotel California" wave files in the main window. The rest should be intuitive, but check the manual. Good luck!
@vereen: just follow the instructions in the DW Chrome manual, you'll be just fine.
I listened to flac on my PC and it sounds awesome. I really appreciate it, but now I am trying to burn a DVD-A...
Has anyone succeeded in burning DVD-A with the new 6 CH files? I was under the same impression as grill that these had to be MLP-compressed beforehand to keep them under 9.6 Mbps, even with the DiscWelder.
Suggestions would be appreciated.
1. Foobar 2000: flac -> multi-channel wav
2. TranzCode_GUI: multi-channel wav -> 6 mono wavs
3. SurCode MLP Encoder: 6 mono wavs -> mlp
4. DiscWelder Chrome: mlp -> DVD-audio
@grill: That worked! Now I can pop it in my Acura.
Thank you!
again, and it errors out every time in 2 different mac programs.
Any suggestions that DON"T involve Windows?
Thanks!
I have had NO problems on my Mac. Make sure your part 4 is not corrupted, part of the track in part 5 may begin in part 4. Everything downloads, expands just fine for me. Don't use WinRAR for Mac, unless you are a "power user", it is command line only. I usually use RarMachine or on occasion UnRarX to expand RAR's. Use XLD to send FLAC's to iTunes or use Audacity to create stereo mixdowns. Please feel free to PM me if you still have problems.
Thanx a lot for this wonderful work. However, after downloading all the 13 .rar parts, i put them in a folder and clicked 'extract to a specified folder'. It extrected the .rar file into hotcaldvda6ch folder. But only 5 songs could be extracted successfully ( life in the fast lane, wasted time, wasted time (reprise, victim of love and pretty maids all in a row). Other files got corrupted. A message came during extraction "G:\hotcaldvd6ch.part02.rar packed data CRC failed in 01. hotel california.flac. The volume is corrupt". another message read "CRC failed in 01. Hotel California.Flac. The file is corrupt". Similar messages cme for other corrupted songs also. Can u pls guide me to know, which .rar file out of those 13 downloaded files is corrupt? Or, do I need to download all the 13 files again? Your guidance will help me a lot in getting this lovely lovely album in full... Thanx, Rags
"The DiscWelder CHROME II program does not include an MLP encoder, but it can import soundfiles that are MLP encoded."
I still don't understand why he refers to these supposed "DVD-A rips" as "DTS rips" in the headers. I wonder if he's actually converting the lossy dts tracks instead of the mlp tracks. Wouldn't that be funny...
Thanks for checking.
Please check thanks
