Fauré composed his 13 Nocturnes over almost half a century: a cycle that allows us to appreciate through three different periods the extraordinary evolution of the composer's language and aesthetic sense. These meditative, contemplative pieces are without doubt the richest, most accomplished and also the most varied pieces he ever wrote for piano. Expressing emotion was essential for Faur'e, but always within the framework of typically French style that excludes all emphatic and grandiloquent effects. The Nocturnes are intimate, introspective pages. This not descriptive music: although Faur'e often borrowed titles for his piano pieces from Chopin, he would have liked to call these works simply "Pieces For Piano".
