Gustav Mahler: Symphonie Nr. 9 D-dur - Leonard Bernstein, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
XLD | FLAC (tracks) | No Log/cue-sheet | Frontcover embedded, High-def JPEG | ~402 MB
Classical | DDD | DGG 419 208-2 (recorded Live, 1985)
The Symphony No. 9 in D major was written in 1908 and 1909, and was the last symphony that he completed. The work is considered by many musicologists and critics to be the most intense of his symphonic works. Mahler was at this time a champion of the emerging avant-garde movement, most notably Arnold Schoenberg, and this placed him in a difficult situation as the standard-bearer of the past while being acutely aware of the future of music (and in particular, atonality) opening up before him. The first movement of the Ninth in particular depicts this struggle between tonal stability and instability.
This recording was made during a live performance in June 1985 in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. It stands as one of the very best readings of Mahler's 9th. Just take a look at all the reviews and comments made on the internet on this particular recording. The atmosphere is electrical and hardly any audience disturbance is heard on this excellent DGG-recording. Haitink' '69-version was hailed as the ultimate reading of this intense symphony, and some still consider it to be the best. However, Bernstein's 1985 version with the RCO should take the cake now. Enjoy!

Thanks for the UP. It would be great if you could scan a tracklist for us to print. And a possible back of the CD case. I have been looking for covers for this for a very long time, I mean for this particular release of the 9th. Not other reissues of this same version. No luck, I'm afraid. Possibly you don't have them to start off with. I also tried to get a copy to buy but I have not been able to find one in suitable condition. Sometimes not at all.

Thanks for this UP, Jannem. Now,this is for DanseDePuck. I too am a wee tad disappointed (but still immensely grateful for all the hard work put in upping these great music collections) when there's not fronts and backs of art work. Here's an idea I use that at least gives me a tracklist for a CD cover. Are you familiar with "Snipping Tool?" If not then do this: START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SNIPPING TOOL and then send it to a "short-cut" on your start up screen as it comes in handy now and again. With the "Snipping Tool" you can copy any section of your computer screen. Luckily this CD's download has separate files so just open it then click the "Views" button till it shows up with the tracklist rather than just icons. Not as good as the real thing but it'll do the trick for now. Hope this helps.
