About the Recording

The newest collection from our beloved Patricia Barber was recorded live in three venues during her 2004 European tour (L’Arsenal in Metz, La Coursive in La Rochelle and La Cigale in Paris). The album showcases the pianist/vocalist’s songwriting on five new originals and interpretive skills on 'Laura,' 'Witchcraft,' 'Call Me,' and 'Norwegian Wood.' As you would expect, the sonics are just as stunning as the performances. The bass playing of Michael Arnopol is incredible and recorded impeccably. Neil Alger’s guitar playing is his best work to date and really stands out in his solos. Drum work by Eric Montzka suits the band perfectly. Barber’s singing and playing are tremendous, and through her arrangements, allows the band to truly express themselves. This disc will test the limits of your system. Our Highest Recommendation!

The recording could have been better. The soundstage to say the least is disappointing considering its a vinyl rip. Probably because of being a live recording. Sounds as though someone in is holding a recording machine up in the air while sitting in the middle of the audience.

Thank you so much for MIss barber. I have a question for anyone that might want to shed some light over this issue. I have noticed a hiss (sometimes mild, sometimes not) effect on all music coming for LP sources. This hiss comes mainly from the right speaker. I am playing the music with an Vsi60 Audio Research valve amplifier and Minima Vintage Sonus Faber speakers, all of it brand new. The CD player is a 20 y/o Technics. I usually transfer flac to aiff files and then burn Sony CDs on my Imac with Toast Titanium. The hiss effect is not heard in any other source, does not matter how old the music is (so far). Do you guys know of a cause for this and maybe a way to avoid the hiss?

Thank you for your help,

fernandoxy

@ fernandoxy:

As far as I know, hi-res wavs cannot be burned to an ordinary cd disk. A cd is not built for that. They will be downsampled, I think? I guess it's the same with AIFF, although I don't know that format.
