BIOGRAPHY

The oud is the most beautiful and important musical instrument in the middle east. It is the most beloved and shared instrument for Arabs and Jews. With the oud, as in the desert, time resonates in its own unique, boundless form, a type of Taqsim. Peace, too, takes its time”.

Yair Dalal

Yair Dalal, born in 1955; composer, violinist, oud player and singer; is probably the most prolific Israeli ethnic musician and plays an important role in shaping the global world music scene. Over the last decade he has put 11 albums, covering wide and varied cultural territory, and authentically representing Israel’s cultures and fusing them through music as whole.

Much of Dalal’s work reflects his extensive musical skills in both classical and Arabic music and also reflects a strong affinity he has for the desert and its habitants. Dalal’s family came to Israel from Baghdad and his Iraqi roots are embedded in his musical work. Whether working on his own, or with his Alol ensemble, Dalal creates new Middle Eastern music by interweaving the traditions of Iraqi and Jewish Arabic music with a range of influences originating from such diverse cultural milieus as the Balkans to India. The evocative compositions comprise a unique and colorful sound.
Apart from creating music, Dalal devotes his time to preserving musical heritages from becoming extinct – the Babylonian musical heritage and the music of the Beduim (the Sinai desert nomads).

During the past years he has played in concerts worldwide, collaborated with top musicians from all over the world, from different disciplines, including: celebrated western classical conductor and Maestro Zubin Mehta, Jordi Savall and Hesperion XXI, L. Shankar, Hamza El Din, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Michel Bismuth, Ken Zuckerman, Alam Khan, Jim Santi, Armand Aamar, Shlomo Mintz, Maurice El Medioni, Mustafa Raza, Cihat Askin, Nagati Chelik, Ensemble Kaboul, Adel Salameh, Morwan Abado, The Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Kamerata Jerusalem Orchestra, Melmo symphonic orchestra and many more.

Dalal participates and lectures in various music educational institute in Israel and worldwide, such as “Keshet Eilon”-Violin workshops, ISME-Music Education, European Network for Traditional Music and Dance, Mendecino Middle East Music Camp USA. Dalal is also the initiator of Mediterranean Musical Dialogue in Israel.

Besides his musical endeavors, Dalal is also a peace activist, devoting much of his time and energy to helping to remove ideological barriers between different cultures and, in particular between Jews and Arabs. Dalal performed at the Nobel Peace Prize gala concert in 1994 honoring the Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Palestinian Chairman Yasser Arafat.

Dalal has won several Israeli awards acknowledging his music and his contribution to Israeli music and was also nominated in 2000 for a Grammy as part of Jordi Savall’s ensemble and by BBC world music rewards 2003 for his musical achievements as best musician from the middle east.

Album Review

Recorded in Oslo, Norway, back in 1996, Silan is a fine example of the music of Magda's leading artist, Yair Dalal.
Dalal is a master player of the celebrated oud, the ancient Arab lute.
Here he demonstrates his skills by playing music deriving mainly from Arab and Jewish musical traditions. Tracks such as "Adon Haslichot" or "Silan" are linked to ancient Jewish prayers for Passover and Yom Kippur, the Jewish most sacred holidays. Some tracks, "Trance" or "Dikklat Nur Raga" for instance, are based on Turkish and Indian music.
All together this is a soothing and relaxing album, a must for ethnical music lovers.

Something strange happening whilst decompressing: getting a diagnostic message, warning about a wrong password for several tracks. However, track 1/4/6/7 unRAR without a problem. Tried typing and copying the password - both give the same error. Please advise or repost, because the playable tracks do sound very interesting.

Just downloaded this album for the second time, and there's still a problem with track 3 - "CRC failed in the encrypted file Silan\03 Silan.flac (wrong password?)". All other tracks are fine now.

I am appreciative of your providing the music and the link to useful information, but Like Blade runner, I cannot extract track 3

Kindly therefore post the link to this file separately

Incidentally, other up loaders have found it useful to include error correction, and perhaps you could do so for future uploads

Thanks again, and awaiting the link for the missing track

Thanks for the solution. Even though I got the error again, tyhe file appeared to be in good order. So again, thanks for the two albums. And now excuse me please, I got some serious listening to do.
