As I promise here you have the Charango...

The Charango
Ask anyone to describe the music of the Andes and they will probably mention the "little guitar instrument". They are, in fact, referring to the charango (pictured left). It has five pairs of strings, the third pair being in octaves while the other pairs are in unison. Although it varies from region to region, the most common tuning is in A minor (e"e" - a'a' - e"e' - c"c" - g'g'). Traditionally the charango had an armadillo shell for its sound box, but today wood is more common as armadillo shells have a tendency to warp with age and their resonance is not as good as that of wood. It is an adaptation of some sort of Spanish guitar instrument and has been in existence since the start of the eighteenth century. It was probably made in this diminutive way so that it was easy to carry.

The charango is a versatile instrument that can be strummed, with the hand or with a plectrum, as an accompaniment, or plucked so that it can be used as a melodic instrument. Although similar to the guitar in some respects, it is usually played in a style more reflective of flamenco than of classical guitar music.
