Anouar Brahem - Full Discography
MP3 CBR 256 kbps 44100 Stereo | 10 CDs | FLAC + EAC log + Cue Sheet
Jazz/Ethnic | Artwork for all albums

It has taken Anouar Brahem a mere ten years and a handful of discs – each as innovative as intemporal – to establish himself as one of the most original and talented musicians yet to record on the prestigious ECM label.

Brahem is the Oud’s conjurer, a master at bringing out the acoustic magic this age-old traditional Oriental lute carries in its calabash, all the musical heritage of the Arab and Islamic worlds. Brahem is a phenomenon, a concentrated mix of prolific paradoxes: a supremely subversive classicist; a solitary soloist resolutely open to the world; a «culture smuggler» ever inclined to adventure beyond his own limits, pushing back musical frontiers without ceding an inch of the aesthetical standards forged across time and tempered in a profound respect for tradition.

It’s because he’s always recognised this fundamental complexity that it has become his force. And because he’s always sought to weave this abundance of influences and disparate passions into the very matter of his work and compositions, Anouar Brahem is today recognised as one of the rare composers and improvisers capable of inventing a form of music that is totally rooted in a highly sophisticated ancestral culture, yet eminently contemporary with global ambitions. Brahem brings the Oud’s bewitching poetical colours to a host of varied musical canvasses.

From the rich repertory of Jazz (John Surman, Dave Holland and Jan Garbarek are just some of the leading players to succumb to his melodic spells), to the multi-various traditions of Mediterranean and Oriental influence (from his native Tunisia to the confines of India and Iran), his sensitive yet rigorous music ceaselessly redefines a cleverly composite universe of poetry and culture, ever balancing between discretion and sensuality, nostalgia and contemplation.

Born at Halfouine in the Tunis Medina on October 20th 1957, Anouar began playing the Oud at the Tunis National Music Conservatory and continued his training with the maestro Ali Sriti. Indeed, Sriti took him under his wing and initiated Anouar to the Arabian art music, the Maqam, and to the art of improvisation, the Taqsim. By now Anouar was already confirming his double vocation: to re-establish the Oud as a solo instrument, the very symbol of Arabian music, while breaking with conventional tradition in his compositions by integrating elements of Jazz as well as other Mediterranean and Oriental musical traditions.

In 1981, Anouar settles in Paris, working with Maurice Béjart and writing several compositions, particularly for Tunisian films.

The 1985-1990 period finds Anouar back in Tunisia, continuing his writing, playing many concerts and reaping wide public acclamation.

In 1990, Anouar meets up with Manfred Eicher who offers to produce his first record on the prestigious ECM label. The album Barzakh marks the beginning of a highly fruitful collaboration. In just a few years Anouar’s work attracted a host of talented musicians from all sorts of cultures and genres. Many artistes, including Barbarose Erköse, Jan Garbarek, Dave Holland and John Surman, have played Anouar’s music on no less than 10 new albums, all highly acclaimed by both the public and the critics.

I appreciate your efforts and generosity--and fine taste--in posting these uploads. I'm a big A.B. fan and have a number of his albums, but you help fill in the blanks. Special thanks for your posting lossless quality recordings!

Thank you so much - particularly for taking the effort to provide flac files. Just one problem in Le Voyage de Sahar: Track 4. Vague / E la nave va comes out not as a flac file, but as a folder - maybe because of using the slash in the file name? I'd greatly appreciate if you could re-up this particular track in flac quality without the "/" in the file name. Except for this minor flaw this is a superb post!

Sorry for flooding - didn't see anything happen and pressed the post button several times without knowing that every time the same message was being added!

How can I make up for this misbehaviour? Maybe by posting my friend dehri's upload of Anouar Brahem's concert at Salvatorkirche, Duisburg, Germany, March 19, 2000:

CD 1
01 - al hizam al dhahbi

Now THIS is what I call a post! Thank you very much!

Ambrose: Just edit the cue file in a text editor (Notepad if you're on a PC), and change the file name so that it has no /.

This is the way, Ambrose, to overpass the problem with the "/", as Felix described: Edit the cue file in a text editor and change the file name so that it has no "/".
Sorry for the inconvenience. Anyhow, if you would like me to re-upload it, just let me know...
