“On the Encoder

I've encoded this album with the new LAME 3.97b2 which is the first version since 3.90.3 (dating from May 2003) that is being recommended by hydrogenaudio.org, a highly regarded authority on MP3 encoding.

The presets have new names in LAME 3.97. I've used the highest VBR setting -V 0 --vbr-new with a bitrate range of 220-260 kbit/s. It about equals the old --preset fast extreme of older LAME versions, but gives an even better sound quality (and works faster).

Without going into details, I'm relying on what I consider the most knowledgeable sources when I say that, today, you probably can't get a better MP3 file than with LAME -V 0 --vbr-new.

People who've already downloaded this album when I posted it a week or so ago probably don't have a reason to d/l it again, as I expect the quality increase over the first version (which also had been encoded with high quality LAME settings) to be minor. This second version contains roughly 17 MB more data, though.		”
