| “ | "One thing I noticed with all of the many stars that we brought to São Paulo - everyone expressed to me that they really wanted to come for one purpose... because they love the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. And so do I." Herbie Hancock | ” |
The greatest gift on this album is the most beautiful and really heartbreaking version of Jobim's "Luiza" you can find,
played & sung by Tom Jobim himself, a year before his death. Don't miss it.

Recorded at the Sao Paulo Free Jazz Festival in Brazil on September 27, 1993, barely a year before Antonio Carlos Jobim's death, ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM/FRIENDS is an all-star tribute to the father of bossa nova, the blend of traditional Brazilian samba and American cool jazz that was all the rage in the mid-'60s.
Featuring a wealth of stars, including pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, percussionist Alex Acuna and singers Gal Costa and Jon Hendricks--not to mention Jobim's son Paulo on guitar--the 13-track set is sharper and seemingly better rehearsed than most such one-off performances.
The overture-style "Prelude Melody" opens the proceedings with a trio of Jobim's best and most complex melodies, played flawlessly by the assembled group before continuing through a well-chosen selection of Jobim items both classic and rather obscure.
The closing jam session of "The Girl From Ipanema" is the only misstep on this otherwise delightful album.
Pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba's performance on "Água De Beber" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.

Thanks for the post, but I must say I found this album very disappointing... it is a Live "tribute" album, and as is often the case with such endeavors, it is more about the style and sensibilities of the stars playing (Hancock) than of the one to whom they pay tribute. Jobim himself is only on the last 4 cuts, where finally Jobim's warmth begins to overcome the slick professionalism of the star players. If you are looking for a really good Jobim album, go to this poster's blog for Antonio Brasileiro, which is absolutely "MUST HAVE".
