Bach's Trauerode BWV 198 was first performed in October 1727, one month after the death of princess Christiane Eberhardine
of Brandenburg-Bayreuth. She was the wife of the Elector of Saxony Friedrich August I, elected King of Poland under the title of August II,
known as August 'the Strong'. The fact that Christiane Eberhardine remained faithful to the Lutheran confession endeared her to the Saxons.
After her death four months of mourning were decreed.
