| “ | A Rudolf Rocker Release! As Itamar Doari has just become a father and is less keen to tour, for his European tour in the Spring of 2011, Avishai returns to the "Gently Disturbed" format of a trio with kit drums, this time played by Amir Bresler, who debuted on Amos Hoffman's 2010 CD "Carving" before making his first live appearance with Avishai, Shai, Itamar, Karen and Amos at the Brosella open-air festival in Brussels on 11th July 2010 (unrecorded). The next week, on the 19th, the sextet played at Juan Les Pins in France, a concert broadcast by satellite television (available). The group would revert to a quintet for a concert recorded for NDR in Hamburg on November 18th (available), but following happy events in the Doari family, Amir Bresler would at last come to the fore in the reduced format of the acoustic trio of the European Spring 2011 tour. His sensitivity - ranging from the most discrete of cymbal taps to the thunder of monster extended drum solos - would be impressive in a drummer of any age; to have hit it so young is jaw-dropping. The acoustic trio also allows Avishai to give greater prominence to solo bowed and fingered bass breaks, and for Shai to vamp it up, power piano style - from the full Middle-Eastern flow of "Aurora" and "Seven Seas", the group abruptly but most impressively reverts to acoustic jazz. The setting also helped - a small provincial venue drained of its most obvious audience (from Brussels, an hour away) by the concert at the Ancienne Belgique three days earlier. Of Huy's 900 seat capacity, only 350 went as advance sales, and another 300 locals turned up on the day. The small venue and limited audience (for an artist of this calibre) made it the most intimate of concerts - Avishai says from stage that he feels particularly relaxed this evening because it's "calm", small and not too loud. He nonetheless (or perhaps consequently) freaks out in the third (!) encore when a couple of people stand up and start dancing in their row, and Avishai ends up lying on the floor, rolling on his back, bass on top of him, hammering out the closing notes of Shalom. One thing you can be sure of - the trio enjoyed this gig as much as the audience did - and hopefully, they too will appreciate this recording as much as those who were there - and those who were not but can be now, in spirit if not in body. Yrs, Rudolf Rocker. | ” |
