Kraftwerk - Tribal Gathering

On May 24th 1997, Kraftwerk, legendary German masters of electronica and some of the most influential progenitors of electronic music ever, played a long-awaited live gig at Britain's Tribal Gathering dance music festival, the largest legal dance gathering in the country, composed of a number of huge tents holding up to 10,000 people each in a field at Luton Hoo.

Shamefully, the BBC was supposed to be broadcasting the show live, but instead, edited it down and only broadcast about one hour of the concert.

I attended that Tribal Gathering and had been keenly anticipating Kraftwerk's set as the highlight. I was there with a crowd of good friends, and we ended up taking the best ecstasy that any of us had ever had. Kraftwerk came on and it was an incredible spectacle. Unfortunately, the consensus was that the music wasn't appropriate for our particular high, and the decision was made to leave after a couple of songs, for... a Paul Oakenfold DJ set! Mine was the sole dissenting voice, but in the state I was in, there was no way I was going to be left on my own. In the intervening years, Kraftwerk have received the recognition that was due, and I expect that if I were there with the same group again, we'd have seen fit to stay.

So, it turned out to be one of the major musical disappointments of my life, although I did manage to see them eventually, nearly ten years later. Thanks for posting this and giving me the chance to hear what I missed that incredible night.

thank you for sharing your memories of the Tribal Gathering festival and I hope listening to this CD will bring back some good memories.

The interesting fact about this concert is that:

In May 1997 Kraftwerk performed a new song in Luton, England (Tribal Gathering). This is the so called 'Tribal' or 'Luton', as named by fans. It was performed in 1997-1998 (known from fan reviews).
(Unfortunately the BBC did not broadcast the whole concert and only some inferior audience recordings of "Tribal/Luton" do circulate.)

In October 1997 in addition to the song 'Luton' Kraftwerk performed 2 new songs in Linz, Austria. The beginning of the first song (the so called 'Tango') is the melody of the song Airwaves, originally released in 1975.
'Tango' was also performed later, in 1997-1998 and mainly in 2002-2003 (known from fan reviews). The second song was played the first time in Linz and the last time in Karlsruhe. This 'two-time performed song' is the so called 'Lichthof'.

Anyway, these songs might just be unfinished 'trial-products', works in progress of Kraftwerk.
