| “ | A very under-recorded and lesser-known composer. Many will know of him mainly from his being coupled with Havergal Brian on another Lyrita disc, and those who have heard that disc (which I can upload if anybody wants it) will know what an impressive composer Cooke is. His musical style is neoclassical with a Romantic streak, sounding rather like a combination of Hindemith, Arnold, Rawsthorne and Walton. That said, Cooke does have a distinctive compositional voice, and the music on this CD covers his orchestral output admirably. The symphony is serious-minded and fully in keeping with listener's expectations of the form. The concerto for string orchestra is playful and immaculately crafted (especially the marvelous economy, drama and direct appeal of the first movement). The ballet suite reminds me of Malcolm Arnold in its sense of playful fun - rather than being a simple piece of filler, the suite is a great piece of music by itself. The recorded sound is excellent. It's not fully "modern" in that familiar opulent, plush Chandos style, but it's dynamically and instrumentally very clear - full of colour and presence and if slightly "thin" it never becomes shrill. An important note about my rip: it says peak level is 100%, but I get this with a few orchestral CDs. I take efforts to make sure the PC is under ideal conditions when ripping and have re-ripped the disc once to try to change this result, and also listened to the rip several times and have heard no errors. If anybody has some advice on settings or changes I could make to improve matters, please say, as I have a lot of things I'd like to share and I want the rips to be as good as possible.
