Rafael Kubelik's 1970s Beethoven Symphony cycle--a series unique for its use of nine different orchestras from Europe and the United States. Kubelik maintains a remarkable consistency of performance style despite the differing character of the various ensembles. He renders Beethoven in the time-honored grand manner, with rich orchestral sonorities and well chosen, primarily moderate tempos that pays equal attention to the music's vertical and horizontal dimensions, making performances particularly rich in color and ambiance even as he employs "standard" tempos--that is, tempos noticeably slower than today's period-practice norms.

This is a supremely musical and deeply satisfying recordings of 9 symphonies. There are far too many details to go into. Best is to just listen and discover how Kubelik brings much richness in orchestral details and articulation that makes a lot of musical sense and expressive depth. Certainly far more stimulating than many so called newer HIP recordings, and rivalling even the more well-known Beethoven sets from Karajan, Klemperer, Bernstein etc.

One wonders how this cycle, with its warmer, more fluid approach that celebrates the music's humanity, gets to be ignored by the critics and languished in DGG's archives until a recent set was issued.

Thanks for this, I heard an excellent 7th from Kubelik but wasn't even aware he had completed a cycle, such is its obscurity.

Many knows of Kubelik for his excellent recordings of Dvorak, Mahler and Mozart symphonies. Yet to be discovered are this Beethoven, and the Brahms symphonies recordings which some claimed are among the best.
