“This four-CD set presents a definitive mid-century showcase for Amsterdam's renowned Concertgebouw Orchestra, featuring beloved conductor Eduard van Beinum and a glittering array of legendary soloists. Principal conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1945 to 1959, Van Beinum was acclaimed as a musician's musician, an artist of unassuming integrity who advanced the composer's vision above all. Recorded by Dutch Radio, the repertoire shows off the full range of the Concertgebouw's fabled warmth and richness, from Debussy's La Mer and Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé to Schubert, Schoenberg and great pieces by Dutch moderns Hendrik Andriessen and Rudolf Escher. The set's world-class soloists include Yehudi Menuhin in Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4, Zino Francescatti in Beethoven's Violin Concerto, Solomon in Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 and Dinu Lipatti in Bach's D Minor Keyboard Concerto. The 136-page, three-language booklet features rarely seen photos of Van Beinum and the soloists and composers, as well as an introduction by Pulitzer Prize–winner Tim Page, a detailed producer's note and work-by-work annotation. Also included are artist biographies from The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.

Eduard van Beinum was a musician's musician — beloved by his players, admired by his colleagues and all-too-often overlooked by the public at large. It was Van Beinum's fate to follow the willful but electrifying Willem Mengelberg as music director of Amsterdam's Concertgebouw Orchestra. Because he worked in the wake of a titanic force — as did Barbirolli after Toscanini in New York, Martinon after Reiner in Chicago and Abbado after Karajan in Berlin — the very different virtues he brought to orchestral performance were bound to strike some listeners as anticlimactic.

Still, those virtues were real ones: intelligence, precision, textual fidelity, keen aural sensitivity and abundant personal warmth. He was never out to storm the heavens; he did not "conquer" the scores he took on so much as awaken and refresh them. What we hear in Van Beinum's recordings is truly collegial music-making; one has the sense that conductor and players are fellow pilgrims united on a quest for persuasive, honest and, above all, living performances.

Despite Van Beinum's long, fruitful pairing with the London Philharmonic Orchestra (and a shorter, though no less happy, connection in Los Angeles), his name will always be associated, first and foremost, with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. He led the orchestra for the first time in June 1929; almost exactly three decades later, he died suddenly from a heart attack during a rehearsal of the Brahms First Symphony in the hall that had been his creative home — not the worst death in the world for a musician.

The present set can offer only a sampling of Van Beinum's artistry. (To fully grasp his range, one must remember that, in addition to the composers included here, he was a great Brucknerian as well as an early, apt champion of Benjamin Britten.) The Ravel and Debussy performances are cool, lucid, delightfully transparent; the Franck is passionate yet appropriately otherworldly. Van Beinum was devoted to the music of his own land; his advocacy permits us a rare opportunity to evaluate the work of two contemporaries, Rudolf Escher and Hendrik Andriessen (the last of these the father of the celebrated present-day composer Louis Andriessen), in eager, authoritative performances.

Van Beinum's taste in soloists was in keeping with the musical values he esteemed. Zino Francescatti is elegance incarnate in the Beethoven Violin Concerto, and Yehudi Menuhin brings an earnest, seeking quality to the Mozart Concerto No. 4. The short-lived Dinu Lipatti, who never seems to have played a note that was less then surpassingly musical, is represented here by the Bach-Busoni D minor Keyboard Concerto — a major addition to the all-too-slim Lipatti discography. Finally, the pianist Solomon was an artist after Van Beinum's own heart: thoughtful, rooted and, without eccentricity or grandstanding, both individual and universal.

great recordings indeed. part 3 of CD 3 is missing. please, do reupload. The firt two parts of Beethoven Violin Concerto performed by Francescatti is great. Shame not to be able to hear the Rondo)))
