| “ | The string quintets on the record were written between 1772 and 1795. The Menuet of op.13 No.5 in E major is the most popular, and often performed on its own and many transcriptions. The piece shows the influence of the Spanish style, and the typically Boccherini syncopations and pizzicatos, which indicate that he had absorbed the conventions of guitar playing are all present. Syncopation scintillates in op.37 No.2 in D major, presenting the charm and impishness of 18th century Madrid. Boccherini himself spoke of op.30 No.6 as a quintettino or opera piccola giving it a title of its own. Musica notturna delle strade di Madrid pairs, in a masterly way, grace with a festive popular mood, much the same sort of thing as can be discerned in many Goya painting. Romanticism affected Boccherini as well and sentimental tones dominate e.g. the largo of op.20 No.3 in F major. In the Minuet as well the wealth of sentimental variation of the tune and Boccherini's irresistible imagination are in evidence. Op.50 No.2 is D major received the name of "fandango", the most ancient of Andalusian dances. András Lindner | ” |
| “ | In 1975, the Boccherini Quintet, on the Ensayo record label, recorded an exceptional interpretation of Musica notturna delle strade di Madrid, that in 1976 won the Grand Prix du Disque, by the Académie Charles Cros. (From Wikipedia) | ” |

What do you mind about Karajan's version? Remember that rough talk is forbidden...
I don't have anything against the Karajan, but it doesn't have the character, intimacy, and rightness of the Quinteto Boccherini recording above. It's the filler on a Karajan/Berlin Respighi disc, so I wouldn't buy it just for the Boccherini. I also find Savall recording somewhat overblown in this work. That leaves a recording on Capriccio, which I find under characterized.
I think that for 95% of Karajan recordings, you can find a better version; but if you choose the Karajan's version, 95% of time you get a very good version.
The Karajan's version of "Musica notturna delle strade de Madrid" falls on the other 5%...
