The German music critic Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt commented in 1982 on Jochum's seriousness as a musician: "The devout Jochum was never inclined to external business. The word "star" cannot be used for him. But his musicianship attained universal approval and recognition." Jochum's performances gained fluidity primarily as a result of a liberal use of tempo modifications. The variation of tempo in his best performances achieves a sense of seamless motion due to the conductor's fine control of those variations. As Jochum aged, his variations became ever more subtle and his interpretations took on a sense of Olympian calm. Jochum's repertoire concentrated on the great German classics. Best known for his Bruckner interpretations, his co- repertoire also included Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Mozart, and Schubert. The present collection of live performances from Central German Radio Archives provides significant and rare additions to Jochum's discography. These penetrating and magnificent interpretations are too important not to be in every Bruckner lover's collection.
