Donizetti was, for nearly a decade after 1835, the leading composer of Italian opera. His work represents a transitional stage in operatic development between Rossini and Verdi
| “ | Don Pasquale is an opera buffa, or comic opera, in three acts. In the tradition of opera buffa, Donizetti harkens back to the stock characters of the commedia dell'arte. Pasquale is recognizable as the blustery Pantalone, Ernesto as the lovesick Pierrot, Malatesta as the scheming Scapino, and Norina as a wily Columbina. ~ Wikipedia
This recording is a superb performance of a jewel of an opera. Riccardo Muti's tempos are fast, very fast, and from the overture onwards, the opera sprints along in a wonderful way. There is a sense of joy in this performance that is largely absent in most performances (recorded or live) of this delightful operatic comedy. Muti keeps a very tight rein on his singers: although this is a bel canto opera (where elaborate vocal decorations and interpolated top notes are the norm), Muti does not permit his singers to indulge in any sort of vocal embellishments whatsoever.
Mirella Freni is a great Norina, a full lyric voice with good coloratura, and a delicious characterization; this recording is one of her best. Gosta Winbergh's Ernesto is no less impressive, the role could have been written for him. His lyric tenor is truly a beautiful and finely tuned instrument, and he exemplifies what bel canto singing is all about. Sesto Bruscantini is an endearing and vocally fluent Don Pasquale, and Leo Nucci is a convincing Dr. Malatesta. Both of them add a great sense of fun to the procedings.
If one is looking for a recording of "Don Pasquale", this one would certainly qualify for the caliber of the performance as well as for the sheer standard of the singing. ~amazon.com | ” |
A very useful review of Göran Forsling (MusicWeb International)This spirited performance of one of the best buffo operas lays claim to be one of the foremost recordings. Ever since it was first released on LP, almost 25 years ago it has held an honoured place in my collection, next to the old Cetra recording from 1952. They have the main protagonist in common. In 1952 Sesto Bruscantini was in his early 30s and a mercurial old bachelor. He allowed a great deal of ‘business’ to be added to the written music, in accordance with old traditions. Thirty years later he is arguably even more suited to the role age-wise and the performance is more straight, possibly due to Riccardo Muti’s more puritan attitude. Muti was always a stickler for the original score and rarely allowing any frills. This does not imply that the comedy is underplayed but there are places where I prefer the more light-hearted atmosphere of the old recording with Mario Rossi at the helm. I nowadays own it in a CD transfer on the German Line Music label. The sound quality, though still comparatively ancient, is a good deal better than on the Everest LP transfer from the late 1960s, through which I learnt this music. EMI’s recording with Neville Boyling as balance engineer and John Mordler as producer is as close to perfection one can expect from an early digital source.
Riccardo Muti has always put an unmistakable personal stamp on his readings, especially of operas, and in a way he is the hero of this recording – for better or worse. I wouldn’t call his reading inflexible but he holds the proceedings on a tighter rein than Rossi, who is more lenient with the singers and gives them time to linger over phrases of special importance. Muti is stricter but still allows the singers some freedom. The result is a taut performance where the tension never slackens. This is even more noticeable when one listens to the complete opera but his stamp is very obvious even in these excerpts. The choice of numbers is sensible and in several places we get quite long scenes of uninterrupted music. The only problem for someone who knows this music is that whenever there is a cut one regrets that not everything could be included.
Tempos are brisk without being rushed and rhythms are springy throughout. On this account Muti wins over Rossi hands down. On the other hand Rossi’s reading is warmer and since the libretto is so heartless – which is my only objection concerning this opera – warmth is what to some extent can remedy Malatesta’s callous intrigues. But Muti can also be warm and the cello soloist is given space to caress the beautiful solo in the overture with sensitive phrasing.
The cast could hardly be bettered. Of course Bruscantini can’t disguise that he is an elderly gentleman, but he has preserved so much of his voice that it hardly matters and he is of course a master of turning a phrase memorably. Leo Nucci’s Malatesta is simply his best performance on record. Bella siccome un angelo is sung with such elegance and sap in the voice and such seductive phrasing that he twists Don Pasquale round his little finger.
Gösta Winbergh almost challenges Cesare Valletti, the best Ernesto since Tito Schipa, with his lyrical, plangent tone and impeccable legato and his Com’è gentil and the following duet Tornami a dir are models of beauty and elegance.
At the time of the recording Mirella Freni had been taking on heavy roles such as Aida, Tosca and Elisabetta in Don Carlo, but when she returned to her former lyrical territory she was just as beguiling as ever. The tone is slightly harder than it was twenty years earlier but her singing is still a wonder of freshness and agility.
In the ensemble scenes, of which there are plenty, especially in the second act, the voices blend admirably and patter duet by Malatesta and Pasquale is spirited if not as breakneck as in some performances. With the Ambrosians turning in a virtuoso version of the chorus in act 3 and the Philharmonia on their toes, this is a highlights disc to savour. The booklet has Julian Budden’s admirable notes from the original 1984 issue but no sung texts. Incidentally my review copy got stuck towards the end of track 18, Ernesto’s Com’è gentil, which was a pity since it is so well sung, but I can’t believe that this defect is inherent in every copy.

Basic Plot Summary of Donizetti's Don PasqualeAct I
Don Pasquale is a wealthy, and lonely, old man who wants a bride. Don Pasquale wishes to disinherit his nephew, Ernesto, who is in love with the widow Norina. Pasquale goes to his friend, Malatesta, to help him find a wife so that he can leave his inheritance to his own children rather than his nephew. Malatesta, believing Don Pasquale is quite foolish, (and also being friends with Ernesto) offers to introduce him to his sister “Sofrinia.” (who happens to be Norina in disguise)
Act II
“Sofrinia” meets Don Pasquale, and he immediately falls in love with this quiet and shy bride. They sign the marriage contract, which leaves half of his possessions to his bride. As soon as the contract is signed, she becomes noisy, obnoxious, and demanding toward Pasquale (everything she was not before they were married) annoying Don Pasquale. Malatesta informs Ernesto of the scheme. Don Pasquale fears that he has made an awful mistake.
Act III
“Sofrinia” has gone to the theater (with Ernesto) without Don Pasquale, which angers him. He confronts her, and she slaps Don Pasquale, telling him that it is time to end the marriage. Norina drops a note from Ernesto. Don Pasquale enlists Malatesta to help him catch “Sofrinia” in the act of adultery by setting a trap. Ernesto is serenading Norina when Pasquale arrives to prove that “Sofrinia” was an adulteress. When Don Pasquale sees that “Sofrinia” is in love with his hated nephew, he blesses their marriage, happy to be free of the woman. “Sofrinia” is revealed to be Norina and Don Pasquale realizes that he has been duped.

Incidentally, both cue files are defective. Kindly post the corrected files separatly.
Thanks in advanvce
I modified the files because the original cue files did not output the exact beginning/end of each track.
I worked guided by the wave files and I did not verify all the changes.
Unfortunately in the first cue file I made about two big mistakes when I wrote the time, so indeed it was useless especially for tracks 13 and 14.
Other tracks needed minor time adjustements and now all is OK.
In the second cue file I found now only minor time delays and I also corrected the numbers, as a consequence of peer review.
Now I write here both cue files and I hope they will work ...
Kindly try one more time, before I abandon this otherwise excellent post
In Foobar they work fine for me with the ape files.
Thank you in advance.
I played it in foobar2000, and can't see where is the problem either...
I didn't try until now CUE Splitter, so I was not aware of some incopatibilities with fractions of time between (it seems) .75 - .99 seconds.
That was the cause of the failure of my modified cue files to open in CUE Splitter.
Now I changed again the cue files and I checked the output .wav track files so I hope there will not be problems anymore.
The correct cue files could be found in the last two rows of the post.
I am really sorry for that mistake and for the inconvenients caused to some avax users. :(
Thanks again for the music and for your cooperation in the matter
thanks
