| “ | Seji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra give a stunning performance here of the Fauré Requiem. This requiem is unique in that it is not a piece meant to instill fear and the terror of death into the listener. Fauré, as a church organist, was tired of hearing and performing masses that were dark, heavy, and macabre. Thus, he created here a requiem mass not focused on the dark aspects of death but rather the beauty and calm of the pending afterlife. This work is one of the most exquisite jewels in the entirety of music. The moving power of the Requiem mass is truly heavenly. Ozawa gives a very good reading of the Requiem. The recording sound is crystal clear, which brings out the beauty of the choral part writing. This is a wonderful recording. | ” |
| “ | Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) is one of the composers whose music served in many ways as a bridge between the Romantic and Impressionist eras. Many of his compositions are imbued with the rich sonorities we generally associate with composers such as Brahms or Berlioz, yet mixed into that sound is a brilliant transparency that evokes the tonalities of Ravel and Debussy. In his entire output there is no other work that captures the essence of this duality more than the moving Requiem. Composed during the late 1880s, the Requiem is a powerful mass for the dead that brings together the haunting sound of a full chorus and the delicate playing of the strings and winds of the orchestra. Seiji Ozawa leads a brilliant performance of this very demanding work, and his soloists, the soprano Barbara Bonney and the baritone Hakan Hagegard are sublime. But, the star of this recording is the amazing singing of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. If you don't know this work, and unfortunately most people don't, you owe it to yourself to hear how this underrated composer poured his soul into this work of devotion. As a special bonus, the recording is rounded out with Barbara Bonney singing five Faure songs accompanied by the great Warren Jones on piano. Further, Hakan Hagegard performs three songs and the ravishing Poeme d'un jour, also with Jones accompanying. These songs were welcome discoveries to this writer and will be to you as well. -Jacob Anthony | ” |
