Reinhard David Flender studied theology, piano, composition, and musicology in Hamburg, Münster, und Jerusalem. After winning the first prize in the piano competition "Jugend musiziert" in 1971, he began his studies in Hamburg in 1972. In 1977, he received a piano diploma from the Nordwestdeutsche Musikakademie in Detmold. From 1977 to 1981, he studied composition with Josef Tal and musicology with Israel Adler at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His M.A. thesis resumes his ethnomusicological research work on Hebrew psalmody.

Back in Hamburg, he took his Ph. D. with Constantin Floros on biblical cantillation. Since 1983, Flender has been teaching music history at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg. In 1987, he was appointed European director of peermusic classical, international music publishing. In 1991, he won a prize for THRENOS II at the "International Wiener Kompositionswettbewerb," and in 1993 he received the Ingrid-Kipper Förderpreis of the town of Soest.
During the summer term 2000 Flender follows an invitation of Witten-Herdecke university to work as composer in residence. In september he will move to Marseille to spend the month in the same function there.

His principal works include: ALEA JACTA EST for piano solo (1977); PERKUSSIANA for flute, piano, and percussion (1985); PIRKEI TEHILLIM for soprano and orchestra (1989); DUO IN TWO PARTS for violin and piano (1991); TRIO for piano trio (1993); KLAVIERKONZERT (1995); MEIN LIEBER BLAUER REITER – 14 scenic pictures from the life of Else Lasker-Schüler for soprano and 14 instruments (1997).
