| “ | No matter how avant-garde he is, everything Ligeti touches oozes musicality. Even when his pieces sound like they come from another planet, the listener feels it in his gut - a strong sense of humanism that overrides cerebral composition. This disc comprises several of his numerous techniques and styles, and Wergo did a fine job of selecting a variety of disparate pieces that compliment each other beautifully. "Continuum (for Harpsichord)" from 1968 is the contemporary of early minimalism (but not of the same scene) and similarly uses repeated notes to create sound as space. Here, the harpsichord creates an almost electronic-sounding effect as it is played as fast as possible in a densely frantic stroboscopic pulse that fuses together to form a haunting spell of overtones. "Ten Pieces for Wind Quintet" eschews Ligeti's famous style of dense vertical micropolyphony in favor of horizontal complexity, a frequently changing and expanding series of melodic explorations. Also here are two pieces from his brief interest in electronic composition. "Artikulation" is a decadent, cosmic array of cartoonish otherworldy sounds (imagine Tom and Jerry in space), while "Glissandi" swoops and flutters like an electronic "song" at hyper-speed (imagine R2D2 channeling the voice of Yma Sumac). The remaining pieces find Ligeti approaching the cathedral organ with a new set of ears, breathing fresh life into an instrument with such a long history, in part by re-thinking its mechanics. "Harmonies" (from 1967) is just that - harmonic drones that ring like extremely protracted chimes. "Coulee" resembles the grid of sound heard in "Continuum", while "Volumina" is a dynamic monster of drama, frequently mutating into new multiforms of tonal color. I can't help the feeling that I'm always understating his genius. Impressive stuff from an impressive master. This is music that will last. ~ Chris Zakes | ” |
