“"Antonio Caldara's oratorio Maddalena ai Piedi di Cristo was a huge hit when it first appeared on disc a few years ago, and presumably this recording of a Caldara mass is hoping for the same success.
The Missa Dolorosa is perfectly tidy but it is an unremarkable baroque choral piece, composed in 1735, two years before his death. Caldara was then at the height of his success and productivity, turning out works, secular and liturgical, for the court of the emperor Charles VI. Alongside Handel's Dixit Dominus it seems tepid, though both performances under Thomas Hengelbrock are carefully styled and alert to every detail."
