| “ | October 14, 2005 marked the 15th anniversary of Leonard Bernstein's death. This lapse of time has only served to secure Bernstein's prominence as one of the most respected musicians of the 20th century and to affirm his reputation as a master conductor, composer, and teacher. Among his many achievements, Leonard Bernstein is remembered as one of Gustav Mahler's most inspired advocates. While few today can imagine a classical music landscape without Mahler, it is doubtful that Mahler would have attained such a prominent place in performance repertoire without Bernstein's promotion. Bernstein wrote and lectured extensively on Mahler and his compositions, effectively putting Mahler on the cultural map while bringing his own distinctive - many would say defining - interpretations of Mahler's music to the forefront. ~ Alexandra Day In sum? I think this DVD recaptures the wonderful magic of Bernstein's unique way with the Mahler symphonies. The Vienna Philharmonic deserves a lot of the credit, they do not sound in the least bit uninterested to play Mahler. Picture and sound quality are very good and noise from the public is very limited. Highly recommended, in every possible way. ~amazon.com | ” |

As a musically un-educated person (but striving to improve this aspect), I find Bernstein's conducting style as speaking for the music itself, *being* musical in itself. It is a priceless experience to watch and listen to such recordings, especially when a composer is introduced to the listener in such a unique manner.
I had a great music teacher back in my school days, to whom I still owe many thanks for having us taught how to listen to music and how to 'get into' the whole thing (insisting upon biographical and historical references, among other things). I guess the other person responsible for my musical 'awakening' and epiphany has to be Leonard Bernstein. There have been many impressive conductors, but as far as I know none of them was the 'teacher-for-the-masses' kind that Leonard Bernstein was.
I also thank you for your very pertinent comment.
I belong to the same category of people for which Bernstein was maybe the greatest teacher for music understanding and listening, so I completely agree with you.
I think that this formative role of our childhood Lennie, is, at least, one good reason for this repost.
