How time flies. It does not seem very long ago that a young Seiji Ozawa took the classical music world by storm with his charisma, flair and talent. Over the years he has endured the slings and arrows of the ever discriminate classical music world. He has had many triumphs along the way.

This recording is a testament to his place as an outstanding conductor. These three concert staples are played wonderfully by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Pictures at an Exhibition and The Young Person's Guide to Orchestra were recorded at Chicago's Medinah Temple on June 18th 1967. This "Pictures" flows with lithe, lean textured vividness. It is not bloated. There is a forward momentum and the musical line is maintained marvelously from beginning to end. Ozawa brings out the poetry in the music while not allowing it to become lumpy. Grandeur and majesty are present but not pummeled upon. It is a magical performance. The orchestration is by Ravel.

"Young Person's" is given a characterful, full blooded and joyous interpretation. I have heard quite a few recordings of this piece. This Ozawa/CSO has become my favorite. It holds it's own among Britten's Decca and the Bernstein Sony.

A Night on Bare Mountain was recorded on August 9th, 1968 at Orchestra Hall in Chicago. It is light on it's feet, super alert and well detailed. Somewhat small scaled but wonderfully alive, it absolutely dances with a sinister glee. You could tell that the orchestra was having a ball with it. The closing section is tenderly wrought and perfectly brought home.
The term "colorist" has been used to describe Seiji Ozawa's art as a conductor. This recording is a perfect example of this description. These are invigorating, flowing, and life-affirming performances.

Great, he was unaware of this album, a young Ozawa is a guarantee of, if not perfection, fire and conviction, sure this recording is by the time of his extraordinary Rite of Spring and Petrouchka also made for RCA. Thank you ramonjd.:)

Indeed, as Perdace states, this is a young Ozawa, coming straight from under Herbie's tutelage, making his mark on US orchestras and audiences at the time. Mil gracias, Ramonjd! Great POST!
