This extraordinarily powerful 1983 production may be the best-sung performance by Luciano Pavarotti on DVD, but when acting values are counted in, Ingvar Wixell manages to outshine the tenor star. Verdi gave the Duke two of Italian opera's most brilliant arias ("Questa o quella" and "La donna e mobile"), but he gave the deformed jester Rigoletto a depth and complexity of character that is reflected in music of great variety and enormous emotional impact: the cruel mockery of the opening scene, the self-doubts inspired by his dialogue with Sparafucile, the paternal anxieties and final despair at his daughter's sad fate, and the burning, self-destructive thirst for revenge. All these motives work their way into music of great dramatic richness, variety, and intensity. Wixell rises to its challenges, not only in the title role but in a cameo appearance as Rigoletto's nemesis Monterone. Location filming provides an atmosphere unavailable in staged productions. --Joe McLellan, Amazon

Many, many thanks!!!

I heard for the first time this version over 15 years ago, on a VHS cassette.
In recent years I heard it again on TV.

Until now I consider it the best Rigoletto I ever heard.
Pavarotti is in his best voice here, a reference role, and Wixel made a wonderful interpretation. Their scenic presence transform this operatic performance into a wonderfull dream. Gruberova and Furlanetto are also very pleasant live presences as well as the very well balanced chorus melodies. Even the episodic presence of Victoria Vergara is a nice experience in this unforgettable operatic masterpiece.

I searched for this version on DVD for years and years and now, thanks to our indefatigable "Just-me", I finally found it.

I warmly recommend to all Verdi and operatic lovers, and even to all classic music lovers to listen this performance.

Bravo!!!

Is is that good, the thing with Ponelle's prodcutions is that it kills the magic of a stage. Sometimes it's excellent like in Carmina Burana, most of the time I'm perplexed.
