Prokofiev's Greatest Hits

Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev born in Sontsovka, Ukraine of the Russian Empire on April 27, 1891–March 5, 1953 was a Russian and Soviet composer who mastered numerous musical genres and came to be admired as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century.

Sergei Prokofiev began work on Symphony No. 1 in D major, Op 25 in 1916, but wrote most of it in 1917, completing the piece on September 20, 1917. It is also widely known as the Classical Symphony. The symphony was premiered on April 21, 1918 in Petrograd, conducted by the composer.

Sergei Prokofiev composed music to the film Lieutenant Kijé in 1933. The suite exists in two versions, one using a voice and the other using a saxophone. The music has also been used as the score for a ballet by the Bolshoi Ballet company. The troika is perhaps the best known movement, frequently used in films and documentaries for Christmas scenes and scenes involving snow.

Peter and the Wolf is a composition by Sergei Prokofiev written in 1936 after his return to the Soviet Union. It is a children's story (with both music and text by Prokofiev), spoken by a narrator accompanied by the orchestra.
