By comparison with the ambitious, sometimes pioneering products of the last musically active decade of his life (1755-1765) much of Telemann's chamber music is conventional in language if not always in form. Nevertheless, we should guard against any assessment which views it as merely fluent. Telemann's chamber suites and cantatas, solo sonatas, trios, quartets and songs almost invariably carry the hallmark of a composer whose understanding of the voices and instruments for which he is writing is both imaginatively practical and technically informed. Indeed, from his own account we know that he was a proficient if not accomplished player of most instruments comprising the standard ensembles of his day; and we know from his contemporaries as well as from Telemann himself that he was especially admired for his trios and quartets: 'I have been persuaded particularly that the trio showed my greater strength' wrote the composer in one of his autobiographical sketches 'because I so arranged it that one part should have as much to perform as the other'. It was an opinion endorsed by such eminent theorists as Johann Adolf Scheibe (1708-1776) in Leipzig, Johann Joachim Quantz (1697-1773) in Berlin, and Johann Mattheson (1681-1764) in Hamburg who reckoned that Telemann's trios 'though something Italian is mixed in, nonetheless flow very naturally and in the old French manner'. Of Telemann's quartets Quantz remarked in his celebrated "Versuch einer Anweisung die Flote traversiere zu spielen" (Essay of a Method for Playing the Transverse Flute, 1752):'... "six quartets" for different instruments, the majority for flute, oboe and violin, which Mr. Telemann wrote some time ago... may provide excellenl and beautiful models for compositions of this type'.
