| “ | Abstract Avant-Garde Improvisations and Experimental Electronic Soundscapes I am profoundly influenced by the experiments of the great modern theoreticians of the avant-garde, but it is the appreciation of the actual resultant sound world, not necessarily the theory behind it, that has been the most influential. My own method of exploration is very free and spontaneous. After spending a considerable amount of time studying the theory and evolution of the concepts concerning this thing we call “music” I have come to realize that what interests me most is the use of sound as a medium of expression that is more closely related to abstract painting and sculpture (the organization of textures and shades – the play of light on surfaces and the blending and blurring of one’s conception of time and memory) than the organization of melody, harmony, and rhythm in any traditional sense. The term “music”, with all its’ baggage and implications, is probably best substituted for a more accurate description such as “audio collage” or the term coined by Edgard Varese “Organized Sound.” Dissonance, consonance, noise and silence are all just colors on a palate. With recent advances in technology, artists have the capability to create and organize sound (and almost any other medium) in a highly personalized manner. Traditional methods and concepts may play little or no part at all in one’s procedures. The giant electronic studios of the past are now available to the home desktop and processes that once took days can now be completed in seconds. My own approach is guided by a deep reverence for the natural world (I usually strive for a very organic sound, even when working with purely synthetic sound sources); a fascination with the strange, bizarre and unusual and a “science fiction” like attitude toward experimenting and exploring the possibilities of aural juxtaposition and superimposition. I love the sound of Gregorian chant as well as the buzz of insects and machines. I love the cerebral explorations of the avant-garde and, at the same time, the spiritual and primitive directness of free improvisation and the traditional music of the world’s cultures. I hope to combine all the best of these influences into some kind of expressive art form and original voice that will both intrigue and enchant the imagination of the observer. ~ Kevin Martin | ” |
