| “ | Premiere recordings of unpublished works and new critical editions. Donald Berman is a superlative pianist, but as any number of attempts by excellent players have shown, it takes more than technique to bring Ives alive. To my ears Berman's Ives most resembles the playing of Ives himself, as we hear it in the composer's private recordings. With Berman there is the same subtlety of voicing you hear in Ives's playing, the same power combined with delicacy—a surprising thing to say about Ives, but that's how he often played his own music. Berman studied with John Kirkpatrick, the composer's first great interpreter, and kept growing from those studies. Ives was a prophetic genius whose consciousness, and piano writing, stayed rooted in Romanticism. For a pianist that's a very difficult balancing act, but Berman handles it beautifully. A new generation of performers are reaching a mature and seasoned approach to Ives, and Donald Berman is a vital part of that achievement. But what coincidence! Yesterday I listened to Ives's piano sonatas.
Thank you
Charles Ives is an outstanding composer.
Fantastic upload, amigo
Muchisimas gracias.
Now that we have our Unknown Ives, can real Ives stand up? Seriously, I think there are two "outstanding composers" that have been neglected here at Avax: Ives and Hindemith. Both composers have made a huge contributions in the avantgarde circle and they're by no means unknown.
Anyway, thanks for the share!
Firstly, the new subcategory system on Avax give many choice options: so I've put these Ives' on "Classical"; "1900-1950"; year of release: "2000s" and also, a little hesitant, in "Avant-Garde" as primary category!
Yes: I consider Ives Avant-Garde for the innovative tension in his music. When Ives composed many of his principal works, in Europe the Wien Schule was just in gestation and think to 1910's works of Debussy, Ravel, Strawinsky etc.
Ha, no pipe with 'unusual' content for me anymore. Dark tobacco, yes, in large quantities - I'm just rolling one with the right, and type my answer to you with the left hand...habits make one dexterous, especially the bad ones.
As for Ives, the anachronistic blacksmith who constructed our 20th C. perception of avant-garde, pipes won't have done it for him; perhaps his occasional diabetic hypos may have caused his music to run indiscriminately back and forth from the concert hall to the revue. Kindred spirit Zappa must have loved his compositions
I'll have to digest this

May I add some more heroes which are almost completely ignored at Avax:
Ernst Krenek
Aribert Reimann
George Onslow
Franz Berwald
...
Anyway, can somebody please shut that CR MOFO up? Give him the ticket to Interzone.

Nah...trying to talk to people like cr will result in him spreading out another wasteland of meaningless letters in front of you...wearing out the scroll function in your mouse when you're trying to get through to the message of the grown-up you actually want to discuss things with.
Bah.
Seems like I've just missed the war... didnt I ?
We've not been properly introduced yet. So, I'm usualy not into forums and stuff like that (mostly because of the moder*ting issues..... and it's sad indeed that my fears have one again been justified).
But in the recent weeks, I've been motivated to post my share around here mostly by you guys!
So when I just overcome my lack of faith in humanity I find this mess...
Anyway, FredCouples was sugesting moving elsewhere and you can count me in.
Iz you have my support! I hope we can still share our passion on a better place maybe..
Sorry if my english sucks a bit...
