Ragnar Grippe was born in Stockholm, Sweden on 15 October 1951. He studied the cello with Gustav Gröndahl at the State Academy of Music in Stockholm from 1966 to 1969, then musicology at the University of Stockholm from 1971 to 1972. He studied electronic music at the Electronic Music Studio Stockholm and also at Groupe de Recherches Musicales de l'ORTF (GRM) in Paris, where he gained a diploma in 1974. He studied composition with Luc Ferrari from 1973 to 1975, and then the following year electronic music at McGill University, Montreal. He is also active as a lecturer and lives and works mostly in Sweden after 20 years in France.
Ragnar Grippe is a prolific composer whose works have been extensively performed outside Sweden. Above all, several of his compositions have been commissioned by various French interests and performed all over France. Not infrequently he has collaborated closely with various choreographers, and this has resulted in a succession of ballets. For the Bicentenary of La Scala, Milan, he was commissioned to compose the ballet Omaggio a Picasso. He has also collaborated with several film directors, and made a great name for himself as a composer of film music, which does a great deal to explain why he is so widely known.
In 1985 he was awarded the Grand Prix de Meilleure Musique du Cinéma in Aix en Provence. He also has a considerable output to his credit in other fields besides incidental music. The long list of his compositions includes the electronic trilogy made up of the separate compositions Orchestra, Ten Temperaments and Conversation, as well as l'Archer Coupe l'Air en Deux, La Chambre d'un Rêve and Grand Voyage sans Larmes, the last being a composition commissioned by GRM presented during the 50th year anniversary of electro-acoustic music in 1998.
Instrumental music is taking up more and more of Grippe's production, with chamber music, piano duos and orchestral works as the Piano Concerto (1993). Grippe has also collaborated with singers, and his Requiem (1995) has reached a big audience. One of his aims as a composer, he has said, is to investigate various acoustic problems. This is also made clear in his remarks on Ten Temperaments, which can also be taken to characterise many of his other compositions: "The exaggeratedly simple occurs here sometimes as a counterpoise to sections reminiscent both of different musical styles and of extra-musical experiences." To this can be added the fact that he has also employed the idiom of pop music and traditional classic music as elements of his own compositions. | ” |
