Beethoven Complete Piano Sonatas Wilhelm Backhaus (second cycle - stereo)
Classical | EAC: Flac, Image, cue, log | no scans | 2 Gb
Decca 433 882-2 | 1992 | 8 CD

This cycle, recorded between 1953 and 1969, is very controversial. It's reputation was allways better in Europe than in America. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest interpretations of Beethoven's sonatas, more important than the Schnabel's cycle, equal to Arrau's and Annie Fischer's. Backhaus's Beethoven is rude, straight and severe, but it is also profound and full of integrity.

Thanks for recognizing the importance of Backhaus in this day and age! I also have the previous MONO set which to me is like the Bible together with Schnabel. I was going to say "pity no scans" and then shut up when I saw our friend's kind over above. Many thanks to all for this.

DanseDePuck, I agree, also for Schnabel, even if he's not the pianist I prefer. The french critics used to praise Backhaus and I allways wonder how different can be the american critic's view about his work. I also love his Brahms concertos and cello sonatas with Fournier.

I don't have this cycle with Backhaus, but I'm eager to compare it with the Kovacevich cycle which I find to be brilliant along with Brendel and Arrau. Thanks a lot for sharing ;)
