These pieces are some of Bach's greatest compositions. I have the MHS set by Oscar Shumsky, first on vinyl in 1978 then on CD. This looks to be a good recording on period instrumentation.
Like the Cello suites, this music is too much to handle at one gulp but will be something that you grow older with and find constant satisfaction from.

This Naxos re-release of Bach’s Partitas and Sonatas for unaccompanied violin is, in every sense, a fine recording. Especially worthy of acknowledgement is the very warm sound of the Baroque violin. The superb accompanying notes by the musician are a "must read" for anyone with an affinity for these masterpieces.

I've listened to the Partita #2 all the way thru - comparing it with the Shumsky version - very different! Almost as if they were a quarter-tone apart in key. The Dutch baroque violin/bow has a much "weaker" sound than the 'modern' violin Shumsky used on his recordings (1715 "Rode, ex-Duke of Cambridge" Stradivarius). The value of this recording if nothing else is the comparison with performances on later instruments.
