| “ | While the sound of early instruments is reminiscent of chiaroscuro Baroque splendours, the bandoneon calls up the urban world of the tango. Combining the two, as Daniel Brel (b. 1950) does in his works, blurs these distinctions, allowing the instruments to speak with their own voices. The result is an extremely personal type of music that is both poetic and poignant, born of the moving encounter between Daniel Brel and Vincent Dumestre and his musicians. | ” |

The first instrumental record of [the early music ensemble] Le Poème Harmonique [that] is devoted to a contemporary composer. Blessed with a remarkable harmonic and poetic intuition, Daniel Brel (b. 1950) blends the bandoneon, violas and the theorbo in a unique and personal idiom: that of melancholy.

I acquired this disc a while ago, but was not impressed the first time I listened to it and put it away. After I recently "rediscovered" it on one of the shelves, I was pleasantly surprised by both the beauty of the music and the way the seemingly disparate instruments blend so well together. The recording is sure to appeal to Baroque and/or early music lovers too. If you want to experience it at its most tuneful, go to track 15 Sous l'écorce. Enjoy!

You are welcome! The month of October is over. And there you have it - several shares of different styles of music! From Australian electronic composer to French bandoneon player, from world music inspired by Iberian peninsula to a new interpretation of Debussy's Quartet, from Irish sean-nós singer to Klezmer music, from Philip Glass to shakuhachi enhanced with electronics... Hopefully some of you found something to like in this wild melting pot of the world musics! See you in November! :)
