Duo Jalal - A Different World (2011)
Contemporary Classical, Ethnic | Innova | 2011 | 67:03 | EAC (FLAC, cue, log) | Booklet | RS | 331 MB
Kathryn Lockwood (viola), Yousif Sheronick (percussion)

A Different World, much like the marriage between Kathryn Lockwood and Yousif Sheronick, represents an organic amalgam of cultural traditions and musical styles. The collaboration of a classical violist and world percussionist captures disparate worlds merging. The musical styles on this ground breaking disc range from Classical to Klezmer, Middle Eastern to Jazz. The confluence is natural and unforced.

This remarkable blend of melody and rhythm creates a musical conversation unlike any other. The viola is augmented with the sounds of the durbakeh (goblet drum) and riq (tambourine) from the Middle East, the West African djembe, and numerous frame drums from around the globe. From Philip Glass, to Derek Bermel to John Patitucci, composers are eager to contribute to duoJalal’s repertoire as their view of the musical world is all-encompassing. duoJalal’s name is inspired by the 13th century poet Jalal Rumi, whose visions, words, and life teach the world how to reach inner peace and happiness and that people of all religions and backgrounds can live together in peace and harmony.

Kathryn Lockwood combines classical technique, a ravishing tone, and a most definite feel for the mideastern musical mode. Yousif Sheronik adds his mastery of traditional mideastern and south Asian hand drumming (frame drum, tumbek, etc.). They tackle pieces that range from the more formal minimalism of Philip Glass to melodic frameworks that give room for improvisation within their form (such as David Krakauer's “Klezmer a la Bechet"), to the more through-composed modern post- classicism of Kenji Bunch.

Both artists show excellence in stylistic grasp and nuanced execution. Duo Jalal breathes a freshet of new wind into the sails of a form of music that goes back countless centuries. The composers represented do the same on their end.

A Different World, that. It is our world today. The maps we see have hard and fast borders. The music we hear transcends those borders, sometimes. Duo Jalal does just that with a very memorable album. Very much recommended.

Many thanks and regards from The Netherlands.

In this moment I'm playing the music, but I don't suppose the music is interesting enough to hear the whole CD.

You don't have to listen to the whole CD, for that matter you don't have to download my shares at all. Better still, you might have to consider sharing some music yourself.

Many thanks for all the marvelous music you've uploaded (not just this single disc).

Thank you for another great share.
PS. All your old rapidshare archive is
still working fine. Lots of good stuff
and well worth a browse.

Thanks for this share... I think people who want to listen same kind of music (like rap or trash metal) must not download this CD. But I loved the music...

You are all very welcome!

@ prumnopitys - as long as folks will continue to download the old files, Rapishare will keep them. On the other hand I may have to switch to another file hoster from now on, since posts with Rapidshare as the only hosting service are not accepted any more.
