Karol Szymanowski - Harnasie · Mandragora · Etude for Orchestra
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Cover+Booklet | 288 Mb
Label: Naxos - Date: 1996

Karol Szymanowski spent his early years in Ukraine (where many affluent Polish families still owned land at the time). An injury to the leg forced young Karol into a life of relative inactivity, and, from age seven on, attendance at school was replaced by rigorous musical studies (first under his father's tutelage, and then, from 1892 on, at Gustav Neuhaus' music school in Elisavetgrad). Although early training focused on the piano, Neuhaus was quick to observe his young student's potential as a composer. While in Elisavetgrad, Szymanowski was introduced to the German classics as well as to Chopin and Scriabin. After studies with Noskowski in Warsaw from 1903 to 1905, Szymanowski lived for a time in Berlin, helping to found ......

Lennox and Michael Berkeley: Berkeley Edition Vol 6 (Schartz trumpet; Shelley & Stott piano; BBC NO of Wales - Richard Hickox)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Cover+Booklet | 366 Mb
Label: Chandos - Date: 2007

A rare example in the modern world of father and son composers of similar distinction, both Lennox and Michael Berkeley have in turn reached a position of prominence and influence in British musical life. They are represented on this disc by works showing their craftsmanship in tailoring works to particular performers and occasions, without compromising their individual language and vision. Lennox Berkeley’s two-piano concerto, written in one of the most fertile periods of his career, is a highly effective showpiece for its soloists, which nevertheless avoids the obvious in terms of form and treatment. Lennox Berkeley wrote his Concerto for Two Pianos in 1948 in response to a commission from ............

Isaac Albeniz - Piano Music (Complete), Vol. 4 (Baselga)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Cover+Booklet | 248 Mb
Label: BIS - Date: 2003

Born in 1860, Isaac Albéniz is best known for piano music that brilliantly evokes the spirit of Spain. As a composer-virtuoso, Albéniz successfully melded together composition and performance to create a bravura style reminiscent of the music of Liszt, seasoned with Spanish folk idioms. The work that most convincingly represents this synthesis of virtuosity and tradition is the enchantingly colorful and atmospheric Iberia, a suite of 12 pieces recalling Spanish (particularly Andalusian) places and dances. Albéniz used folklore as his inspiration, but created a singular melodic style, which eventually influenced Debussy and Ravel. Believing that artistic originality and an interest in one's national musical tradition do not exclude each other, Albéniz likewise was largely the creator of the Spanish musical idiom that would be adopted and developed by Granados and de Falla - All Music Guide

Lennox and Michael Berkeley - Piano Works (Margaret Fingerhut: piano)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Cover+Booklet | 247 Mb
Label: Chandos - Date: 2004

With their flair and brilliance, the Six Preludes justifiably became regarded as among Lennox Berkeley’s finest piano works. They originated in a BBC commission for short pieces that could be performed as interludes between programmes (the BBC later dropped this idea). Berkeley intended the pieces to be playable by skilled amateurs and while two proved more difficult than he had envisaged, none requires a virtuoso pianist.
Berkeley’s natural adroitness at developing thematic material is nowhere demonstrated better than in the Sonata, his most significant ...

Karol Szymanowski - Songs with Orchestra (Polish State Philharmonic Orchestra (Katowice) & Karol Stryja)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Cover+Booklet | 330 Mb
Label: Naxos - Date: 1989

In the Song of the Fairy-Tale Princess, on feels that Szymanowski must have known Stravinsky’s Le Rossignal. On Naxos, both the Song of the Infatuated Muezzin and the Love Songs of Hafiz are sung by a tenor (Ryszard Minkiewicz) with impressive insight, but the 1989 recording is resonant and does not flatter him. Jadwiga Gadulanka is hardly less impressive in the extraordinary Songs of the fairy-tale princess and Barbara Zagórzanka sings the famous Chant de Roxane beautifully, and both she and Anna Malewicz-Madej in the Kasprowicz songs are very well balanced.

Szymanowski, Karol (1882-1937); Stravinsky, Igor (1882-1971) - Works for String Quartet
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Cover+Booklet | 274 Mb
Label: Naxos - Date: 2000

Even within the comparatively limited medium of the string quartet, Szymanowski creates characteristically rich and exotic texture in these original and tautly constructed works. They were written ten years apart in 1917 and 1927, demonstrating the way his style was developing ever more personally over that period. Occasionally echoing Debussy and Ravel, they make a pointful contrast with Stravinsky’s characteristically cryptic essays in the genre, sharp and often brittle. The Golden Quartet prove understanding, refined interpreters of both composers, playing with rapt intensity in the hushed slow movements of the Szymanowski works. Excellent sound.

Lennox and Michael Berkeley: Berkeley Edition Vol 5 (Howard Shelley piano, BBC NO of Wales - Richard Hickox)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Cover+Booklet | 313 Mb
Label: Chandos - Date: 2004

Lennox Berkeley wrote his Piano Concerto in B flat major in 1947–48 for his loyal interpreter Colin Horsley, who gave the first performance in the Royal Albert Hall in London. The solo part combines a good deal of bravura writing, including several passages of double octaves, with simple, lyrical melodies, sometimes over a Chopin-like arpeggio accompaniment and sometimes played by the two hands in octaves.
A convert to Roman Catholicism in his mid-twenties, Berkeley composed a good deal of music for worship, as well as several concert works on sacred or devotional texts. Among the best known of the latter is .......

Isaac Albeniz - Piano Music (Complete), Vol. 2 (Baselga)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Cover+Booklet | 248 Mb
Label: BIS - Date: 1999

Miguel Baselga’s on-going traversal of the piano music by Isaac Albéniz has shown that there is much more to the composer than the four books of Iberia usually regarded as his crowning achievement. The present disc largely concentrates on the early production, including Marcha Militar, the very first piece that Albéniz is known to have composed, at the age of nine. The Six Mazurkas de salon and L’Automne-Valse Baselga also gives us a taste of the salon-type music that Albéniz often included in his own recital programs during the 1880s and 1890s. The Mazurkas were written for, and named after, six of Albéniz’ piano pupils, all daughters of important upper class families in Madrid... - CD Compact.
