Ernestine Schumann-Heink – The Victor Recordings 1911-1920 (2001)

I’m beginning to understand something about people’s fascination with very old historical recordings such as these. Schumann-Heink was born in 1861, when some of the great early romantic composers had been dead for only a few decades or so (Beethoven 1827, Schubert 1828, Paganini 1840, Mendelssohn 1847, Schumann 1856). Late romantics were still alive (Liszt of course; Brahms, Wagner etc.).
We can hear her sing on these recordings. It is amazing. An internet friend of mine summarized it beautifully:

"...it is magic to roll backwards so close to Schumann alive! And to hear, not the sound of an instrument, but a real human voice of that time! Like the famous 'frozen words' that Rabelais invented; words that had been incarcerated in ice, and have now become audible again …Rabelais was only dreaming, but Romophone did it!"

The albums have been remastered from 78rpm lps by the legendary sound engineer Ward Marston

Thanks for the great music from this great singer! Do you also happen to have the earlier volume of her Victor recordings from 1900-1909, also issued by Romophone?
