| “ | Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann could be considered the unluckiest composer in classical music. A series of unfortunate coincidences and ill-timings led to his compositional career never being fully realised. The highly successful premiere of arguably his most significant work Undine was even curtailed by the theatre burning down after 14 performances and the opera was only staged once more – unsuccessfully – within the composer’s lifetime. However despite being a gifted caricaturist and writer (his novel The Nutcracker formed the basis for Tchaikovsky’s ballet) and a well-respected music critic, as well as sustaining a brilliant career as a lawyer, Hoffmann always considered his music his tour de force. The neglect his music received during his lifetime and still receives today is surely unjustified when considered in the light of works such as Undine. Extensive elements of Mozart, Beethoven and Gluck can be seen throughout his writings and although Hoffmann showed himself more than capable of writing beautiful melodies, his flair lay in the way he used and developed themes. | ” |

Beethoven (1770-1827)
Hoffmann, E.T.A. (1776-1822)
Schubert, Franz (1797-1828)
Hoffmann was standing next to the giants. Unlucky timing indeed.
Thank you tapaz9 very much for the music.
