Klarenz Barlow – Klavierwerke von Klarenz Barlow (2008)
Classical/Avant-garde | APE lossless | cuesheets+log | covers+booklet | 1h11m | 307mb
Label: CYBELE RECORDS | cat. no. CYBELE SACD 960.308

I’m not sure if I understand what Barlow’s trying to do in the first composition, “Ludus Ragalis”; according to the booklet, he wanted to fuse Western and North Indian classical music. Whether he managed to do so convincingly is up to those who study music. For me personally, this collection of fugues and preludes were definitely not the most fascinating compositions on this album. It sounds as if someone is practising tone scales without gusto, it goes on and on and nothing much happens.

Which cannot be said for the rest of the album. Fascination starts as off track 27, when the piano player comes in; these and the piece bearing the impossible title "Cogluotobusismetlesi" (forget about all the accents in the spelling) for four pianos provide for the excitement which Ludus Ragalis lacks.

Somebody requested this, so I thought I’d get it.

Note: When I made an EAC rip of this, the name fetched from freedb. org became so long that I didn't want to take the risk of archiving it and hear later on people couldn't extract the files. So, I shortened the names of the Ape file and of the/in the cuesheets. The log still shows the long name.

I wonder why he changed his name from Clarence to Klarenz?
Posted By: arikanat Date: 04 Apr 2011 23:12:13
thank you d'Avignon. i'm not a musician either but cogluotobusisletmesi is the best expressionist piece i have heard after Debussy's la mer. Anybody who travelled through Anatolia (Asian part of Turkiye) by bus would understand what i mean. The piece directly brings the sights and sounds and even smells of a bus terminal in Anatolia; hence the title cogluotobusisletmesi (not the correct writing by the way but close :)) which means bus management of Coglu (a place in Turkey).

I'll make sure to give it a better listen, close my eyes and try to picture the scenes. Thanks for the interesting comment, arikanat. It helps to appreciate the music
