Main reason for me to order for this album was Andiessen’s “Workers Union”, which I had heard before, but didn’t own yet.
The track is a beautiful example of the composer’s personal brand of raw-edged minimalism; it certainly gets the treatment it deserves here, what with legendary Orchestra De Volharding performing it in its inimitably rough and lively way. De Volharding was a project co-founded by Andriessen and Dutch jazz original Willem Breuker, and was meant to attract experimental musicians from various genres. Leftist political views were involved at the time, as was all the rage among young and rebellious Dutch intellectuals in the early seventies. Fidel Castro and chairman Mao were popular among these musicians, although one can hardly say the youngsters had firsthand knowledge about the actual situation in either Cuba or China.
There is more to enjoy: next to familiar compositions like Riley’s “In C” or Adams’s “Short Ride in a Fast Machine”, we see lesser-known works like Kyle Gann’s “Sunken City” or David Lang’s “Street”

Many thanks! I've already heard most of these works but a different interpretation is always welcome. Looking forward to Kyle Gann's composition, and hoping for some of the microtones he's known for.

Well, unfortunately no microtones heard in Gann's piece... But I recommend this set for the beautiful arrangement (no strings here) of Steve Reich's "City Life". I'm less enthousiastic about the performance of "In C"... In my opinion, the brass instruments don't seem to invigorate the streaming pulse as efficiently as with other instrumental configurations I've heard ("Bang on the Can" for instance).

Andriessen's piece "De Volharding" on the 5th cd of "De Muzikale Anthologie der Noordelijke Nederlanden" may give a better idea of what De Volharding is capable of. See my blog, p. 9 or thereabouts.
That performance was taken from a legendary concert. When I ordered for The Minimalists, I was hoping for something in the same energetic style. Hm. It's not quite as good. Yet, I'm more than satisfied with "Workers Union". They did that well. Something of the old, rocking orchestra can be found there.

High time to get some Willem Breuker online, by the way. I'll see to it one of these days

Good share! I may have this record already, from the Russian site. ;)

@Piterets

Yes, Shortly after I'd ordered for it, I saw it was on the Russian torrent site. So I needn't have done all the work. But then, if taken from another site, I wouldn't have posted it here. So far, I've kept my avax account exclusively "own rips"
