Froberger - Works for Harpsichord (Gustav Leonhardt) [2009]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | Covers | 1cd, 334.63 MB
Classical | DHM | 88697568392

In addition to this CD by Gustav Leonhardt performing keyboard works of Johann Jakob Froberger (1616-1667) on the harpsichord, I own one other Leonhardt recording of the works of this neglected composer, a 25-year-old LP on the Harmonia Mundi label which I've been wearing out lately. Wanting to expand my collection a bit, I elected to purchase this CD which I am thrilled with. The playing is impeccable, Leonhardt's reputation is immaculate and he's simply a god as a keyboard musician...

Evan Ziporyn - Frog's Eye (2006)
Contemporary Classical, Vocal, World | Cantaloupe | 2006 | 53:26 | EAC (FLAC, cue, log) | Booklet | Various File Hosts | 315 MB
Anne Harley (soprano), Evan Ziporyn (bass clarinet), Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Gil Rose (conductor)

The lushness and easy melodiousness of these four orchestral works is almost startling, given Ziporyn’s (b. 1959) history, but it is certainly not an unpleasant surprise. An essential element in the texture of this music derives from the large percussion section, reflecting the composer’s intense and life-long interest in gamelan music. ... The gamelan world does not dominate the current release, but it is nearly always lurking in the shadows, if it is not now and again bursting through in a more exuberant fashion.

Musica Sacra - Monk and the Abbess (1996)
Contemporary Classical, Vocal, Choral | Catalyst | 1996 | 61:10 | EAC (FLAC, cue, log) | Booklet | Various File Hosts | 361 MB
Musica Sacra, Richard Westenburg, conductor

Meredith Monk's (b. 1942) music has been linked to the sacred vocal works of Hildegard von Bingen, the 12th-century mystic abbess and composer. It's often been said that Monk's voice can sound simultaneously ancient and new. She certainly belongs to a group of singer/composers who reacted to the vibrato-laden ornate antics of 19th-century opera, and sought to return to the clarity found in medieval ars nova and chant, as well as Eastern European folk traditions. I remember the poet Robert Pinsky once saying that if you want true inspiration, don't look back one generation or even two, but delve way back into the distant past, to the origins of language and art. Monk has created timeless music.

Gounod - Requiem & Messe Chorale (Michel Corboz) [2011]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | Covers | 1cd, 260.18 MB
Classical | Mirare | MIR 129

Charles Gounod (1818-1893), in the view of Camille Saint-Saëns, ought to have been better-known for his church music than for his operas. This gives some idea of the quality of his sacred works, to which he devoted not only his unwavering faith but also the highest degree of musical skill. His Requiem in particular, presages Fauré, Duruflé and Poulenc, and constitutes one of the masterpieces of the genre.

Szymanowski, Karol (1882-1937); Stravinsky, Igor (1882-1971) - Works for String Quartet
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Cover+Booklet | 274 Mb
Label: Naxos - Date: 2000

Even within the comparatively limited medium of the string quartet, Szymanowski creates characteristically rich and exotic texture in these original and tautly constructed works. They were written ten years apart in 1917 and 1927, demonstrating the way his style was developing ever more personally over that period. Occasionally echoing Debussy and Ravel, they make a pointful contrast with Stravinsky’s characteristically cryptic essays in the genre, sharp and often brittle. The Golden Quartet prove understanding, refined interpreters of both composers, playing with rapt intensity in the hushed slow movements of the Szymanowski works. Excellent sound.

Lennox and Michael Berkeley: Berkeley Edition Vol 5 (Howard Shelley piano, BBC NO of Wales - Richard Hickox)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Cover+Booklet | 313 Mb
Label: Chandos - Date: 2004

Lennox Berkeley wrote his Piano Concerto in B flat major in 1947–48 for his loyal interpreter Colin Horsley, who gave the first performance in the Royal Albert Hall in London. The solo part combines a good deal of bravura writing, including several passages of double octaves, with simple, lyrical melodies, sometimes over a Chopin-like arpeggio accompaniment and sometimes played by the two hands in octaves.
A convert to Roman Catholicism in his mid-twenties, Berkeley composed a good deal of music for worship, as well as several concert works on sacred or devotional texts. Among the best known of the latter is .......

Le domino noir (The Black Domino) is an opéra comique by the French composer Daniel Auber, first performed on 2 December 1837 by the Opéra-Comique at the Salle de la Bourse in Paris.[1] The libretto to the three-act piece is by Auber's usual collaborator, Eugène Scribe. It was one of Auber's most successful works, clocking up 1,207 performances by 1909. It received its UK premiere in 1838 and appeared in the USA the following year. Some of Auber's music has a Spanish flavour to reflect its setting.

Isaac Albeniz - Piano Music (Complete), Vol. 2 (Baselga)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Cover+Booklet | 248 Mb
Label: BIS - Date: 1999

Miguel Baselga’s on-going traversal of the piano music by Isaac Albéniz has shown that there is much more to the composer than the four books of Iberia usually regarded as his crowning achievement. The present disc largely concentrates on the early production, including Marcha Militar, the very first piece that Albéniz is known to have composed, at the age of nine. The Six Mazurkas de salon and L’Automne-Valse Baselga also gives us a taste of the salon-type music that Albéniz often included in his own recital programs during the 1880s and 1890s. The Mazurkas were written for, and named after, six of Albéniz’ piano pupils, all daughters of important upper class families in Madrid... - CD Compact.

Anton Rubinstein - Piano Music (1871-1890) (Joseph Banowetz)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Cover+Booklet | 253 Mb
Label: Naxos - Date: 2010

The Naxos label's recordings of music by Anton Rubinstein fit in with its more general effort to revive late Romantic music that fell out of favor thanks to people who believed dogmatically in progress, or in nationalism, for Rubinstein was the most Western-oriented of Russian composers of the period, and some musicians have never forgiven him for it. Hard as it may seem to believe for a composer once so well loved, both the pieces included receive their premiere recordings here. The major one is the Theme and Variations, Op. 88, composed in 1871. Both Liszt and Busoni (who may indeed have been influenced by it) admired this work, and it is hard to understand how pianists could have let it fall into disuse. Although most of the variations are of a fairly conventional sort, the structure of the work is innovative…

Auber - La muette de Portici (Fulton, Kraus, Anderson) [2002]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | Covers | 2cd, 642.2 MB
Classical | EMI | 7243 5 75257 2 5

This is French Grand Opera at its best. This is considered by music historians as "ONE OF THE CHIEF CORNERSTONES OF FRENCH OPERA", Tell, Robert le Diable, and La Juive being the other corner stones. As a work, it is simply thrilling and very exciting musically. Auber knew how to keep his audience on the edge of their seats.
