Sviatoslav Richter (piano); Peter Schreier (vocal)

Sviatoslav Richter's only (complete) recording of Schubert's Winterreise.
This is a mesmerising performance of Schubert's greatest song cycle, with two great artists striking ice cold sparks (if such a thing is possible) off each other. Schreier had reached a stage in his career where he could do what he wanted with these songs. His voice has a weary, half-crazed grey hue which matches the predicament of the traveller and Richter's beautiful accompaniment compels attention from the first chords. It is truly a wonderful journey marred only by recorded live before an audience who seem in the last stages of a flu pandemic. The coughs and splutters are horribly disracting at times - the reason for four not five stars. But then, this is a winter's journey!
The coupling is one of Richter's most provoking sonata performances, with the first movement tempi stretched to breaking point. Such is the concentration that one is completely taken up with it - repeat and all. Incredible! Richter sticks to Schubert's score and the sonate ends (unfinished) in mid air.
